In terms of experience it is a no contest in this year’s World Championship final, but Mark Selby is not sure it will do him much good against the laidback Luca Brecel.
The Englishman is playing in his sixth Crucible final having won four of his previous five, while the Belgian is in the Sheffield showpiece for the first time.
In fact, Brecel had not won a single match at the Crucible before this year, so has already pushed boundaries just to get this far, while few have more World Championship experience than his opponent.
Selby is glad to see the Bullet playing well on the sport’s biggest stage, saying he has as much natural talent as anyone and he expects the 28-year-old to bring his all-out-attack game with him to the final.
‘Fantastic. It’s great for him, he’s such a good kid, great for snooker as well,’ Selby said of Brecel’s run to the final. ‘He’s one of the most naturally gifted players you’ll ever come across. To see him actually fulfilling his talent is pleasing to see.
‘He ain’t going to change his game for me, he’s just going to carry on playing what’s got him to the final and why wouldn’t you? It’s obviously working, so carry on doing the same.
‘I’ll just go out there, play my own game, play the balls for what they are and see what happens.’
On the huge gap in experience, Selby thinks Brecel’s personality is perfectly equipped to deal with it.
‘I don’t think Luca’s that kind of character, he’s such a laidback kid,’ said the four-time champion. ‘He just goes out there and plays, he’s so blasé about everything. I don’t think anything really fazes him.
‘It won’t be too much of an advantage because of the kind of character he is.’
Selby and Brecel play over four sessions on Sunday and Monday in a race to 18 frames.
