Marnus Labuschange admitted he was left in a state of ‘disbelief’ after Jos Buttler gifted him a life during the closing stages of the first days’ play in Adelaide as Australia dominated the start of the second Ashes Test.

Australia’s usually flamboyant No.3 finished the day unbeaten on 95 but was given a reprieve when England’s wicketkeeper inexplicably dropped a routine catch off the bowling of Jimmy Anderson.

Speaking after the close of play, Labuschange said: ‘That was massive for the team just getting through that period me and Steve and really setting up well for tomorrow and making a big first innings score.

‘The last bit I wavered there with that shot and got dropped. A few prayers up there I don’t know how that happened.

‘There’s a bit of disbelief. I have to capitalise on that now. I gave them a chance there so I’ve got to make sure no chance tomorrow.’

England batting coach, Graham Thorpe, meanwhile revealed Buttler was crestfallen afterwards but was confident the error wouldn’t leave any lasting mental damage for the wicketkeeper / batsman.

‘Jos is going to hurt, but he is going to have to get out of bed, come again and enjoy his day tomorrow because that’s what Test cricket is all about,’ he said.

“Anyone who’s played this game drops a catch, it’s always disappointing. He’s a human being.

‘It’s a bit like being a goalkeeper, being a wicketkeeper, you can keep magnificently throughout the day but if you drop a catch it gets highlighted.

‘We’ll get round him and try to be philosophical about it, you have to be.’
