Jimny may not be as majestic as Thar, but has potential to emerge as a popular choice if launched at a competitive price point
Ahead of its launch, Maruti Jimny display units have started arriving at dealerships. Bookings are open for a token amount of Rs 25,000. Test drives are expected to be available around the time of launch in May.
Maruti continues to test Jimny across the mountainous regions of the country. It was recently spotted parked next to a Maruti Alto, where it looks just as unassuming as the hatchback. Of course, Jimny has larger dimensions. But its core character and vibes are not very different from other Maruti cars.
Maruti Jimny styling
As compared to Thar’s dominating street presence, Maruti Jimny has a relatively toned-down profile. Folks looking for a showstopper ride will apparently stick with Thar. In comparison, Jimny would appeal to folks with sober tastes. Jimny has a boxy profile with features such as round LED headlamps with washer, 5-slot chrome plated grille, prominent bumper, clamshell bonnet and practical drip rail roof.
Side profile is distinguishable with its squarish flared wheel arches, wide body cladding, side mounted turn indicators, black rear-view mirrors and body-coloured door handles. Rear section is largely flat with the spare tyre mounted on the tailgate. Tail lights are positioned on the bumper.

Jimny is the same length as Thar, but has less width and height. Jimny’s compact proportions can be advantageous across both city streets and off-road environments. As seen alongside Alto, it is apparent that parking won’t be an issue with Maruti Jimny. Boot space is 208 litres, which can be increased to 332 litres with the rear seat folded.
Inside, Jimny offers a comprehensive range of features such as 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system with SmartPlay Pro+, Surround Sense powered by ARKAMYS and wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Other highlights include cruise control, leather wrapped steering wheel, automatic climate control and steering mounted controls. Safety kit includes 6-airbags, ABS, EBD, ESP, hill hold control, hill descent control, rear view camera, side impact door beams and engine immobilizer.
Maruti Jimny Off Road Performance
With its ladder frame chassis and 3-link rigid axle suspension with coil spring, Jimny has immense capabilities across off-road tracks. It also has AllGrip Pro with 4L mode (low range transfer gear). Other off-roading capabilities include ground clearance of 210 mm, 36° approach angle, 24° ramp breakover angle and 50° departure angle.
Powering Maruti Jimny is the K15B 1.5-litre petrol motor that churns out 104.8 PS of max power and 134.2 Nm of peak torque. Transmission choices include 5-speed manual and 4AT. When launched, Maruti Jimny will go up against Mahindra Thar and Force Gurkha. Although Jimny is a global bestseller, it remains to be seen if it can deliver similar results in the Indian market.
