Maruti Suzuki Swift not only topped the company sales charts but it was also the best-selling car in India in March 2023

Maruti Suzuki India Limited was once again the No.1 automaker in India in March 2023, and that too by a significant margin. This was despite the automaker facing lower sales both on a YoY and MoM basis.

Total domestic sales stood at 1,32,763 units in March 2023, down 1 percent YoY when compared to 1,33,861 units sold in March 2022. It was also a 10 percent MoM de-growth from 1,47,467 units sold in Feb 2023. Market share dipped 2.1 percent YoY to 39.5 percent in March 2023 from 41.7 percent held in the same period last year.

Maruti Suzuki Swift hatchback was the highest selling model in the company portfolio. Sales improved by 29 percent YoY from 13,623 units sold in March 2022 to 17,559 units in March 2023. MoM sales however, fell by 5 percent from 18,412 units sold in Feb 2023. The 2024 Maruti Swift is being tested, with launch expected sometime next year.

De-growth was also seen in the case of WagonR, sales of which dipped 30 percent YoY to 17,305 units in March 2023, down from 24,634 units sold in March 2022. It was a 2 percent MoM growth from 16,889 units sold in Feb 2023.

Posting YoY and MoM growth was Brezza with sales of 16,227 units in March 2023. This was a 30 percent YoY growth over 12,439 units sold in March 2022 and a 3 percent MoM growth over 15,787 units sold in Feb 2023. In the past month, Brezza positioned itself as No. 1 SUV, to command a 27.20 percent share on that list, ahead of its rival Tata Nexon of which 14,769 units were sold.

Maruti Baleno sales were up 11 percent YoY to 16,168 units in March 2023. This was against 14,520 units sold in March 2022 while MoM sales dipped by 13 percent from 18,592 units sold in Feb 2023. The Baleno is the No. 1 seller via Nexa showrooms and these exclusive outlets achieved milestone sales of 20 lakh units in March 2023.

Maruti DZire Sales dip YoY and MoM

Maruti Suzuki DZire sales have been lackluster. The sedan posted YoY de-growth of 28 percent in March 2023 to 13,394 units from 18,623 units sold in March 2022. MoM sales also fell by 20 percent as against 16,798 units sold in Feb 2023. However, in the sedan segment, the DZire maintained its lead over rivals such as Amaze, Aura and Tigor.

Sales of Maruti Eeco van grew significantly YoY by 30 percent to 11,995 units in March 2023, up from 9,221 units sold in March 2022. MoM sales also increased by 6 percent as compared to 11,352 units sold in Feb 2023. Maruti Grand Vitara, a relatively new entrant to the list, added 10,045 units to the sales list in March 2023, a 9 percent MoM growth from 9,183 units sold in Feb 2023.

The sales list of March 2023 also included Alto (9,139 units), Ertiga (9,028 units), Celerio (4,646 units) and Ignis (2,760 units). S-Presso sales suffered severe de-growth, down 69 percent YoY to 2,443 units in March 2023 from 7,870 units sold in March 2022 while MoM sales dipped by 35 percent when compared to 3,761 units sold in Feb 2023.

XL6 sales were also down by 12 percent to 1,754 units in March 2023 as compared to 2,000 units sold in March 2022 while MoM sales fell by 17 percent as against 2,108 units sold in Feb 2023. Maruti Ciaz sales were down to 300 units in the past month. This was a YoY and MoM de-growth of 84 percent and 62 percent respectively, while the S-Cross, that had found 2,674 buyers in March 2022, has since been discontinued from the company portfolio.
