Romita Sr. started his career at DC Comics before joining Marvel as an artist on Daredevil. Stan Lee tapped him to draw The Amazing Spider-Man after artist Steve Ditko left in 1966. While working on that title he helped co-create Mary Jane Watson, who he said was inspired by Ann-Margret.
“We were trying to make a girl that was very with it and very modern,“ Romita Sr. said.
Romita Sr. also helped bring Black Widow, the Punisher, Kingpin, Bullseye, Luke Cage and other notable characters to life in the pages of Marvel comic books.

He later went on to become the company’s art director in the ’70s and ’80s.
“Millions came to know Marvel through his art, and millions more came to know Peter Parker through the unmistakable bold brushwork Romita brought to his pages,” Marvel said in a statement.
Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn paid tribute to the icon by recalling how he reached out to him as a young boy and got letters back from Romita Sr.
“My brother & I wrote Mr. Romita when we were young kids & sent him drawings of superheroes we were working on. He wrote us back, telling us what he liked about the drawings! A truly memorable experience in my life, making me feel like the magic of comic books, which seemed so otherworldly, wasn’t actually that far away. My thoughts & condolences are with his family & loved ones,” wrote Gunn.
