Shang-Chi , which was Marvel’s first superhero film lead by an Asian, opened Labour Day weekend and is North America’s highest grossing film of 2021 with $224.5 million. Worldwide, the film has racked in close to $432 million and stands as the eighth highest-grossing film at the box office this year.

In the film, Liu’s titular hero is forced to confront his murderous dad (legendary Hong Kong actor Tony Leung), his long-lost sister (Meng’er Zhang) and the nefarious Ten Rings organization (the terrorist group that kidnapped Tony Stark in Iron Man ).

According to Deadline , which was first to report the news, Cretton will also develop TV projects for Marvel Studios on Disney+ and the Onyx Collective for Hulu and other platforms.

“Destin is an amazing collaborator who brought a unique perspective and skill to Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings . We had a fantastic time working together on the film and he has so many intriguing ideas for stories to bring to life on Disney Plus, so we’re thrilled to expand our relationship with him and can’t wait to get started,” said Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige in a statement.

Liu tweeted about the sequel news, taking aim at online trolls who predicted the film would disappoint. “Flopped so hard we got a sequel!!” he wrote.
