Marvel reveal’s Doctor Strange’s replacement in STRANGE

Marvel’s current The Death of Doctor Strange miniseries wraps up next month, and the publisher is already looking to the future of magic in the Marvel U. Today the publisher announced Strange, a series debuting in March and starring a new hero as the next Sorcerer Supreme. The series comes from the creative team of writer Jed MacKay and Marcelo Ferreira, with covers by Björn Barrends. No additional creators for the series were named in the announcement.

Here’s how Marvel describes Strange #1, which sees Clea take up the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme left empty by the late Doctor Stephen Strange:

Haunted by her recently returned memories, Clea longs to bring Stephen Strange back from the dead! But when a mysterious group attacks the magical realm, Clea, now the sole protector of Earth against magical threats must rise to the duties of Sorcerer Supreme. Don’t miss the shocking twists, new villains, and unbelievable magical feats as Clea takes Marvel magic to places it’s never gone before!

In a statement accompanying the announcement, writer MacKay described how the new series spins out of the events of The Death of Doctor Strange, and what new foes Clea will face:

“After the apocalyptic events of The Death of Doctor Strange, there’s a new Sorcerer Supreme in residence at 177A Bleecker Street, and a new Doctor Strange- Clea Strange. And she’s got her work cut out for her- when she’s not fighting off the magical gangsters of the Blasphemy Syndicate, or battling undead super-monsters, she’s going after what’s hers: the late Stephen Strange. Clea is of the Faltine, that race of Warlords and conquerors, and like her relatives Dormammu and Umar, she will not be thwarted in her desires, not even by the mysterious Harvestman standing in her way.

“It’s been really exciting to open up a new chapter in the world of Doctor (Clea) Strange, to get some new adventures going and some new weirdies on the table, and I can’t wait for folks to come along with us!”

Strange is MacKay’s latest series for Marvel. The writer is currently part of the rotating team on The Amazing Spider-Man, as well as the writer on Moon Knight. It’s also the latest collaboration between MacKay and artist Ferreira, who recently teamed for the Death of Doctor Strange: Amazing Spider-Man tie-in one-shot. Ferreira’s other Marvel work includes Miles Morales: Spider-Man and Morbius: The Living Vampire.

With Doctor Strange set to play a major role in Spider-Man: No Way Home, out in theaters later this week, it seems unlikely that he’ll be gone from the comics for too long. Still, it’s exciting to see a new character claim the title of Sorcerer Supreme. Clea has yet to make her debut in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but it’s probably only a matter of time before they get to her.

Look for Strange #1 to arrive in stores in March of next year.
