Marvelous Mrs Maisel star says ‘completely different plans’ scrapped

Series regular Caroline Aaron has confirmed the final seasons of The Marvelous Mrs Maisel could have looked a lot different before plans were derailed by Covid.

Back in 2019, season three ended with Midge Maisel (played by Rachel Brosnahan) being dropped from a tour across Europe with Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain) after all but outing him as gay live on stage.

Although a trek across the continent was no longer on the cards, Aaron confirmed the series still had plans to go overseas before filming for season four was delayed.

“I think they had completely different plans in terms of storytelling pre-pandemic,” she revealed.

“As a matter of fact, our executive producer at the end of season three went to London to scout locations. She wouldn’t tell us what was going on.

“But we knew in season four that Midge or maybe the whole gang was going to London or something. And that got scrapped. As everything did.”

At the start of season two, various scenes were filmed on location in Paris when Midge’s mother Rose Weissman (Marin Hinkle) leaves her father, Abe (Tony Shalhoub).

Scenes were also filmed around Oquaga Lake, taking the place of the Catskills, and in various iconic locations around New York.

The cast even got the chance to film privately at Coney Island for the fourth season despite the amusement park not being open to the public at the time.

While she’s sorry to leave her character Shirley Maisel and the rest of the family behind, Aaron also feels showrunners Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino are ending the series at the right time.

“I also think that these creators are so smart,” she told Express.co.uk. “They would never stay too long at the fair.

“A lot of shows that we love, we go, ‘Uh-oh. That should have said goodbye last year.”

“So hopefully we will leave people wanting more.”

In season five so far, Midge has risen to the challenge of her new job as a writer for The Gordon Ford Show, once again finding herself stifled in a male-dominated environment.

Meanwhile, some intriguing flashforwards have revealed the state of the family in the 1980s, including Midge’s ex-husband Joel (Michael Zegen) being behind bars for unknown reasons.

There are still four more episodes to come, so, hopefully, all is revealed before the drama wraps up at the end of the month.

The Marvelous Mrs Maisel season 5 continues Fridays on Amazon Prime Video.
