Students taking classes at three Riverside County community colleges no longer have to wear a mask in the classroom or get a coronavirus booster shot.
The changes took effect this week at Moreno Valley College, Norco College and Riverside City College after the Riverside Community College District Board of Trustees voted unanimously Tuesday night, March 15, to end the mandates, a news release states.
Students and employees are still required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19, though they may apply for medical and religious waivers, district spokesperson Robert Schmidt said.
“We don’t have to wear face masks on campus now,” Schmidt said. “They (trustees) are leaving it up to the students.”
Chancellor Wolde-Ab Isaac said in the news release that the district continues to encourage those who are eligible for a booster shot to get one, and “masks are still highly recommended” to prevent infection.
Schmidt said 68.9% of all students, including those who learn exclusively online, are vaccinated. Of those who attend lectures in person at least part of the time, 86.5% have received shots.
About half of all students have received boosters, he said, as have 72.6% of students who spend time on campus.
The removal of the booster and mask mandates comes as coronavirus cases and hospitalizations continue to fall across the Inland Empire and Southern California and follow California’s lifting of the indoor masking requirement for schools.
