State health officials on Monday reported a continuing jump in COVID-19 cases over the weekend, as virus hospitalizations also increased.
The state Department of Public Health reported a daily average of 1,814 COVID-19 cases over the weekend, which was up 11% from the daily rate of 1,629 infections during the previous weekend. For comparison, the omicron variant peak weekend was 20,329 daily cases in early January.
The omicron BA.2 variant has contributed to a recent increase in cases, along with mask mandates being lifted and more people gathering in person. The Boston-area COVID-19 wastewater data had been climbing for weeks, but it recently started to drop in an encouraging sign.
The state’s positive test average has been rising. The average is now 4.41% — up from 1.6% a few weeks ago. The average for the weekend report was 4.61%.
The state reported 10 new COVID-19 deaths, bringing the total recorded death toll to 20,237. The seven-day average of deaths is now 1.4, which had been much higher following the omicron hospitalization surge.
There are now 398 COVID-19 patients hospitalized in the state, up nine patients from the total count of 389 patients on Friday. Hospitalizations had been spiking for several weeks amid the omicron surge, but then plunged. Patient counts in the past two weeks did start rising again.
The state reported that 28 patients are in intensive care units, and nine patients are currently intubated.
Of the hospitalized COVID-19 patients statewide, 31% of the patients were reported as being hospitalized due to COVID-19 — and 69% of the patients were reported as testing positive while hospitalized for other reasons.
The state reported that more than 5.3 million people are fully vaccinated, and almost 3 million people have received a booster dose. Also, the state reported 237,613 additional boosters have been administered.
