State health officials on Thursday reported a weekly increase of more than 5,000 confirmed COVID cases, while virus hospitalizations again declined around the state.
The state’s daily average of 789 COVID cases from the last week is a bit down from the daily rate of 796 virus infections during the previous week.
The state also reported that 540 total patients are hospitalized with COVID, which is a drop of 94 patients from this time last week.
Before hospitalizations started to decrease in recent weeks, Massachusetts had been seeing a hospitalization rise following a spike in the Boston-area COVID wastewater data.
The state’s positive test average has been declining in recent weeks. The seven-day positive test rate is now 5.80%, down from 5.90% last week.
The state reported 83 new COVID deaths over the past week, bringing the state’s total to 22,209 recorded deaths since the start of the pandemic. The daily average of deaths is now 11, which is lower than the daily death rate during the initial omicron surge.
More than 5.5 million people in the state have been fully vaccinated, and more than 3.3 million people have gotten at least one booster dose. Also, the state reported that more than 1.2 million additional booster doses have been administered.
