The two women, aged 41 and 21, were about to climb when the ice column fell.
The older climber pushed the younger climber out of the way and her actions “probably saved” the 21-year-old’s life, the Duchesne County Sheriff’s Office said in a news release.

She was able to climb down the terrain and drive to Duchesne City, where she called 911 to get help for her injured climbing companion.
However, the older climber later died after becoming trapped “underneath two huge blocks of ice,” the sheriff’s office continued.
A 34-year-old man fell about 40 feet when the ice column “fractured upon impact.”

He suffered serious injuries and was taken off the mountain via helicopter to a nearby hospital, authorities said.
The man’s condition was unknown in an update posted on Tuesday.
Members of Wasatch County Search and Rescue, Life Flight, Utah High-Angle team and the Duchesne County Search and Rescue along with emergency crews, the local volunteer fire department and volunteer ice climbers assisted in the rescue and recovery of the climbers.
The sheriff’s office offered their deepest sympathies for the climber’s loved ones.
“Our sincere condolences to all effected by this tragedy, to the family of this brave, courageous woman who lost her life while saving another,” they said. “We hope that all may find comfort and all the warm support will prevail over your hearts while mourning the loss of your loved one.”
