MasterChef judge RAVES about fabulous Freo eatery

A MasterChef judge has revealed the best bakeries in Australia — and one of them is right here in Fremantle.

Pastry chef Andy Bowdy recommended five bakeries across the nation, urging West Aussies to check out Peggy’s in the heart of the port city.

The family run sandwich shop is already well-known to many in Perth, selling delicious items such as kimchi and cheese tin loaf, BLT on fresh focaccia and schnitty in a sub.

PerthNow food critic Jade Jurewicz couldn’t speak highly enough of the humble white and blue corner shop on Market Street in a recent restaurant review.

“These are sandwiches worth waiting in the rain for,” she said.

“Starting with my favourite, the schnitty, which is crispy and juicy chicken cushioned inside a soft sesame roll with lettuce, cheddar cheese and creamy dill mayo.

“It’s big, it’s messy and it’s delicious.”

Jurewicz went on to praise Peggy’s use of perfectly blended ingredients.

“The freshness of the ingredients, the perfection of the sauces, the soft and tasty bread and also the cooking of the main ingredients came together to make some of the best sandwiches I’ve had,” she said.

Bowdy also singled out Smith’s Cakes & Aquilana Pasticceria in Melbourne, Penny Fours in Sydney, Alice Bakery in Alice Springs and Ross Village Bakery in Tasmania.

He said the Victorian eatery offered Sicilian at its best, including cannoli, gelato and biscuits.

Penny Fours offered quirky croissants including tahini custard, roasted eggplant and parsley and lemon, while the Northern Territory bakery did wonderful patries and creatuive pies.

The Tasmanian eatery, which has been operating for more than 100 years, was good for breads, buns and cakes.

Bowdy gave his insights as part of Cancer Council’s annual fundraiser Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea.
