Matthew Vaughn’s Spy Thriller Argylle Gets a February Release

While Henry Cavill may have hung up his red cape and formally departed the DCU (for now, perhaps), he’s soon set to become a different kind of hero in Matthew Vaughn‘s unique spy thriller, Argylle, the most recent collaboration between production company MARV and Apple Studios. A brief teaser of the new film just over a year ago gave us a hilarious glimpse at Cavill’s rather interesting new look as an amnesiac, globe-trotting super spy, and now there finally is a release date. Per a report from Deadline, the film will premiere in theaters everywhere courtesy of Universal Pictures on February 2, 2024, and then be available to stream on Apple TV+ soon after.

Argylle is unconventionally based on a yet-to be-released novel by first-time author Elly Conway, adapted for the big screen by director Matthew Vaughn. He previously directed the dark comedy superhero film Kick-Ass (2010), adapted from the gritty comic series of the same name by Mark Millar and John Romita Jr. He also helmed X-Men: First Class (2011) and the entire Kingsman spy film series, adapted also from Mark Millar’s The Sercret Service comics. Jason Fuchs, who helped write the story for Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman (2017), penned the script for Argylle and also serves as co-producer alongside Vaughn, Adam Bohling, and David Reid. The film features a surprisingly robust cast of A-list talent, including Henry Cavill (Enola Holmes 2), Sam Rockwell (Jojo Rabbit), Bryce Dallas Howard (Jurassic World: Dominion), Bryan Cranston (Asteroid City), Catherine O’Hara (Elemental), John Cena (Barbie), Samuel L. Jackson (Marvel’s Secret Invasion), award-winning singer Dua Lipa, Ariana DeBose (West Side Story), Rob Delaney (Wrath of Man), and Jing Lusi (Crazy Rich Asians). All roles still remain officially undisclosed, but judging by the previously released teaser, Cavill is clearly set to play Argylle himself, clad in a sharp suit and a hilariously spiky hairdo reminiscent of a certain infamous male model played by Ben Stiller.

While more specific details of the plot of the film and its subsequent novel are still largely underwraps, the official synopsis so far mentions that the story will revolve around a world-class spy named Argylle, who’s suffering from amnesia and is somehow tricked into believing that he’s a globe-trotting, best-selling spy novelist instead. However, overtime his memories and lethal skills come back to him, and when he finally recalls who he actually is, Argylle sets down a path of revenge against the organization he used to work for called The Division.

Of course fans are always happy to see more of Henry Cavill, especially with him now having said goodbye to the role of Superman and departing his popular role as Geralt in Netflix’s The Witcher after its soon to be released third season. This alone should put the movie in good stead to deliver a decent return at the box office and on Apple TV+

Argylle comes to theaters everywhere on February 2, 2024. Check out the latest teaser for the film below.
