MANILA, Philippines — After an impressive Japan debut, Matthew Wright is staying with Kyoto Hannaryz for another B.League season.
Kyoto on Thursday announced that the Filipino-Canadian winger has signed a fresh contract for the 2023-24 B.League season late this year.
The 32-year-old Wright was stellar in his first season for the Hannaryz as he averaged 13.4 points, 2.9 rebounds, 4.7 assists, and 1.1 steals in 56 games, where he played as a starter in 54 matches.
Kyoto finished with a 22-38 card in the 6-foot-4 guard’s maiden stint as its Asian import.
Wright vows to “run it back” when he plays his second season in Japan.
“I am very excited to announce I will be coming back next year to the Kyoto Hannaryz. Thank you to all the fans and organization who have made Kyoto home for my family and I. Let’s continue to climb together,” he said in a statement.
Wright, who was Phoenix LPG’s special Gilas Pilipinas pick during the 2016 PBA Draft, played for the franchise for six years until he did not reach a contract agreement and decided to take his act to Japan.
