Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti will return to Los Angeles on Tuesday, Nov. 16, wrapping up a trip abroad that got unexpectedly extended when he tested positive for COVID-19.
Garcetti returned to the United States this past weekend, and was in Washington, D.C., on Monday, to attend the signing by President Joe Biden of the $1.2 trillion federal infrastructure bill, according to a mayoral aide.
Today, I joined @POTUS for the signing of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act.
This historic bill will invest $1.2 trillion to enhance our nation’s competitiveness, create jobs, & make our economy more sustainable.

Garcetti, a former Biden campaign chair, was among myriad local leaders on hand to witness the signing of the mammoth bill, expected to send billions of dollars to L.A. and the rest of Southern California to bolster transit projects, roadway repairs, alternative-power efforts and more.
“This once in a generation deal will transform our nation’s infrastructure & L.A. for the better. Thank you to @POTUS, @SpeakerPelosi and our entire L.A. Delegation for delivering on this historic investment that will improve the lives & livelihoods of Angelenos for years to come,” Garcetti tweeted.
Garcetti also said Los Angeles will receive funding for building the Sepulveda Transit Corridor, converting Metro’s bus fleet to electric power by 2030, rebuilding the L.A. River habitat; funding ongoing upgrades at LAX and buoying efforts to bust up the pandemic-era logjam of goods at the Port of L.A.
Garcetti tested positive for COVID-19 more than a week ago, on Nov. 3, while attending the United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, Scotland.
The City Council President acts as the mayor, if necessary, when Garcetti is out of town. Council President Nury Martinez took on the role, as usual, while Garcetti was away.
Mayoral aide Harrison Wollman said if Garcetti had city-related work to do, he had the “opportunity” to do it remotely, from his hotel room.
Garcetti’s tenure as mayor of Los Angeles is expected to draw to a close soon. In July, Garcetti, who is termed out as mayor, was picked by Biden to serve as U.S. Ambassador to India. The nomination awaits confirmation by Congress.
It had been anticipated Garcetti would assume the post as soon as December, which would lead him to stepping down from being mayor with about a year still left on his term. A caretaker is one likely option for filling the position, unless a special election is held to finish off the term.
Meanwhile, a mayoral election is kicking into gear, with the June primary the first opportunity Los Angeles voters will have to make their selection for who will succeed Garcetti.
