Starting February 2023, you’ll be able to get Mazda’s first-ever Canadian-market electric vehicle, the MX-30, at all the brand’s dealerships across the country, with pricing set to $42,650 for model year 2023. The crossover not only makes use of Mazda’s e-Skyactiv technology, but also comes fitted with a 35.5-kWh lithium-ion battery that Transport Canada estimates is good for a range of 161 kilometres on a full charge.

However, a new plug-in hybrid EV (PHEV) variant set to be revealed later this week and expected to offer even better range won’t be coming to our shores, with the company turning its attention in North America to larger sport-utilities.

“We can confirm that the MX-30 PHEV will not be coming to our market as we had previously announced,” the automaker said in a statement to Driving. “In Canada, we’ve decided to put our near-term efforts towards our strong upcoming products in the intermediate SUV segment, which is where our customers have told us they want to see efficient, electrified products that fit their lifestyle.”

But back to the car we do get: for 2023 the Mazda MX-30 comes in two trims, the GS and the GT.

Sitting on 18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, the MX-30 GS ($42,650) has standard heated front seats with black leatherette and light-grey fabric upholstery, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. It also features an 8.8-inch center display powered by the latest Mazda Connect system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.

Drivers can expect the comfort of Mazda’s radar cruise control with stop and go; blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert; smart-city brake support in front; pedestrian detection; and more. Moreover, you can also expect complimentary Mazda Connected Services for two years.

Meanwhile, the GT ($47,650) comes with much of the same. In addition, however, drivers will be able to enjoy a power moonroof; Bose 12-speaker premium audio; 360° View Monitor with front parking sensors; and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with HomeLink’s wireless control system.

You can also expect auto-levelling headlights, an Adaptive Front-Lighting System, front wiper de-icer, exterior mirrors with a reverse tilt-down feature, and more. Inside, its premium black leatherette and dark-grey cloth seats are made from 20-per-cent recycled fabrics (Pure White with light grey fabric or Vintage Brown with dark grey fabric are also available for $200 more). And outside, the MX-30 comes in a variety of colours — new this year is Zircon Sand, for a $500 premium, while Soul Red Crystal Metallic and other premium shades return, too.
