MBTA to update progress at halfway point of Orange Line repairs

SOMERVILLE – The MBTA will have an update Friday as workers approach the halfway point of the unprecedented Orange Line repairs.

MBTA General Manager Steve Poftak will discuss the progress in a news conference at the Assembly station in Somerville. You can watch it live at 11:30 a.m. on CBS News Boston in the video above.

At his last update Sunday, Poftak said about 37% of work on the Orange Line had been completed. The month-long shutdown is still on track to end September 19.

Between Community College and the Dana Bridge, we’re prioritizing tie renewal during the Orange Line closure. So far we’ve replaced 1,500 wooden ties that hold rails in place and carry a train’s weight. Depending on the location and conditions, ties can last about 20-30 years on average.
