Punters reckon they’ll go as far as boycotting Maccas after the fast-food giant announced it would start serving potato scallops with chicken salt.
What’s driving the angry reactions? That Maccas decided to name the deep-fried potato snack a scallop.
The debate over what the deep-fried potato snack is called has raged over the internet for decades.
In Victoria and the Northern Territory, it’s the potato cake, New South Welshman vacillates between the potato scallop or just scallop, while in WA and South Australia, it’s known as a potato fritter.
A map posted to Reddit three years ago showed the term by region.

McDonald’s has placed themselves firmly in the NSW camp by naming it the potato scallop and people are GOING OFF.
One guy reckons he’ll sue Maccas for “false advertising” over the name.
While another accused Maccas of coming for the local Fish and Chip shop and called for a boycott.
Others used language to accurately define what the name should be.
McDonald’s describes its scallops as “a true Aussie icon, the perfect combination of crunchy tempura coating and fluffy potato.”
