McDonald’s in Downey will host a pop-up fashion experience on its 70th birthday

McDonald’s is launching a major promotion at its longest-operating restaurant in Downey on Friday, Aug. 18, its 70th anniversary.

The restaurant is located at 10207 Lakewood Blvd., the intersection to Florence Avenue.

It opened on Aug. 18, 1953, just as the chain was beginning to grow through franchising, and featured what would become the chain’s signature “red and white” design with a mansard roof and golden arches, according to a timeline on the McDonald’s website. Today the property includes old-fashioned signage, a museum and gift shop.

Next week’s event is part of a campaign called “As Featured In,” which celebrates product placement of “fan-favorite menu items” in movies and TV shows. Specifically, it publicizes season two of Marvel Studios’ “Loki,” which will begin streaming Oct. 6 on Disney+.

The campaign starts Monday, Aug. 14, with a combo that includes the choice of 10-piece Chicken McNuggets, a Quarter Pounder with Cheese or a Big Mac along with fries, soft drink and a packet of “newly-branded Sweet ‘N Sour Sauce” featured in “Loki.”

McDonald’s calls the Aug. 18 event in Downey a “pop-up fashion experience” that will show off branded merchandise created by London-based skateboard and streetwear company Palace, according to a news release.

The anniversary is not part of the pop-up event, according to McDonald’s representatives.

The Downey Conservancy held a 65th anniversary party at the restaurant in 2018, but president Kathy Perez said in an email that the preservation group has made repeated efforts to contact the owners of the McDonald’s regarding a 70th Anniversary celebration without success. Nevertheless, the conservancy still plans to gather at the restaurant at 5 p.m. Aug. 18 and in a Facebook post encouraged others to stop by.

The first McDonald’s restaurant in the chain’s history was founded by the McDonald brothers, Richard and Maurice, in San Bernardino in 1948. That building, at 1398 N. E Street, no longer exists but an unofficial McDonald’s museum stands in its place. It was created by the late Albert Okura, founder of the chicken chain Juan Pollo.

The McDonald brothers didn’t team up with Chicago businessman Ray Kroc until 1954, leading to the chain’s worldwide expansion.
