Rangnick reflects on first win as Man Utd manager

Scott McTominay admits he and Fred have been through “difficult moments” amid criticism over their midfield partnership.

The duo were often Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s go-to pair during his tenure, especially when he was under the cosh.

The pair, named “McFred”, have been mainstays in the starting XI but have copped flack for their styles of play.

Some felt that United would seek to add a central midfielder in the summer, with Declan Rice among the names touted.

Critics have suggested that McTominay and Fred are too conservative whilst the likes of Thiago at Liverpool and Rodri at Manchester City help conduct play whilst also doing a job defensively.

The Scot though isn’t phased and just looks to stand firm in the face of criticism.

“Sometimes games are difficult. We have had difficult moments this season as a squad, and us both as individuals, that’s part and parcel of the game,” McTominay told Sky Sports.

Scott Mctominay and Fred have faced criticism

“I have got nothing else to say other than I give absolutely everything, I am trying my best to improve, to learn. A new coach has come in and I am doing everything that I can possibly do.

“You just have got to get on with it and be thick-skinned. People can say what they want but ultimately it’s me that’s in my own head, and I know what I am doing behind closed doors is the best thing.”

Ralf Rangnick is now the man calling the shots at Old Trafford.

The German tactician has given his squad the opportunity to stake their case in his opening two games.

Rangnick’s style is a far cry from that employed by Solskjaer, which will inevitably mean certain players will prosper from the appointment.

Pressing is a major part of the 63-year-old’s philosophy which will see a shift in the team’s thinking on the pitch.

McTominay was quizzed on the message from Rangnick and said: “Pretty much every team in the Premier League presses the middle of the pitch with the biggest intensity.

“His ideas in that respect is that the most regains leading to goals will probably be through the middle of the pitch, maybe little passes that get intercepted.

“It’s being streetwise, it’s being smart. It [Rangnick’s thinking] is flexible and easy to understand as well.”

The United midfielder continued: “He’s very firm, very driven and knows what he wants. In meetings he is very clear, that’s the way it is in football. To get your point across, you have to be clear and you have to be forceful.

“If players are not doing what you are asking, then he is not shy to tell you as well. The first early impressions are very, very good.”
