It’s been a massive four weeks for the contestants on Australian Idol, with the live shows finally returning to our TV screens this Sunday.
After more than a decade off air, the singing competition that produced talent the likes of Jessica Mauboy, Guy Sebastian and Matt Corby has returned for its eighth season.
WA is yet to crown an Idol winner, but could this year be the one that all changes?
Three talented WA singers have made it through to the top 12, where the contestants will battle it out every Sunday and the nation votes for its Aussie favourite.
High school students Angelina Curtis and Phoebe Stewart have both proven age is just a number with the two teens both scoring touchdowns last week.
Curtis, 15, was dubbed the next Delta Goodrem by judge Kyle Sandilands following her show-stopping audition.
The Sacred Heart College student told The Sunday Times she wants to follow in her Idol Damien Leith’s footsteps and take out the competition.
“I think this gives me a red-hot go to put myself out there and tell the world who I want to be as an artist. I’m going to be doing this anyway in my lifetime, so Idol would definitely help me to progress along,” she said.
“It’s a great platform to just get myself out there and to earn a full-time living out of what I love.”
Stewart, also 15, has also blown the judges away with her powerhouse vocals. She was just a year old when Idol was last on TV.
“This is what I want to do. I can’t see myself doing anything else in my life. Standing on a stage just gives me the most amazing feeling and makes me so happy, and I’ve never felt that with anything else.”
Long-haired surfer Sash Seabourne has been a favourite among the judges since his audition and continued to blow them away week after week with his acoustic twist on pop classics.
The 24-year-old Fremantle muso says being a part of the show has been a ‘surreal’ experience.
“It’s a great opportunity to stay focused and work hard and make this dream a reality. I’m thinking about after the show as much as what’s happening right now,” he said.
“I believe that I have a purpose in life, and that’s to be a singer-songwriter and a musician. And that’s what I wanted to do, so I want to expose my artwork and my music to the biggest audience I possibly can, and play music for the country for the rest of my life.”
After weeks of the power being in the hands of the four superstar judges – Harry Connick Jr, Meghan Trainor, Sandilands and Amy Shar – it’s now up to the nation to pick who stays and who goes.
Every Sunday, the contestants will take to the stage to convince viewers why they deserve to be the next Australian Idol, with the result shows airing on Monday nights.
For the first live result show, Trainor will take to the stage to perform her smash hit Made You Look.
“I’m having a blast on Australian Idol and I’m constantly blown away by the crazy talent here. I’m so excited to perform Made You Look on the Idol stage,” she said.
Australian Idol live shows return to Channel 7 and GWN7 tonight at 7pm.
