Megan Fox’s Engagement Ring From Machine Gun Kelly Immediately Ignites A Trend

0

Within two days of Machine Gun Kelly and Megan Fox announcing their engagement on their separate Instagrams, a trend for toi et moi (You and Me) rings was ignited and is catching like the passionate fire that the couple seem to share. The fact that it is designed by cult jeweler—the über talented Stephen Webster—just makes it that much more desirable in the realm of engagement rings. The design of Megan Fox and Colson Baker (Kelly’s real name) is more imaginative and personal to the couple than traditional toi et moi rings which were first popular in the 17th century. It is at once edgy and enchanting, created with the master craftsmanship, stunning stones and rock and roll vibe that distinguishes Webster’s designs. He describes it, “The design features two interlocking thorn bands, each side holding one of the two perfectly shaped pear-shape gems. Created in 18K white gold, pavé set with colorless natural diamonds. The diamond is a D color antique cut and the emerald an extraordinary completely untreated Colombian gem.” It is one-of-a-kind and based on the connection and details that Machine Gun Kelly And Megan Fox share. Both waxed poetic when writing about their connection and engagement on their Instagram feeds, with Kelly showing a video of Fox wearing the ring and Fox showing a video of the proposal. “I know tradition is one ring, but i designed it with Stephen Webster to be two: the emerald (her birth stone) and the diamond (my birth stone) set on two magnetic bands of thorns that draw together as two halves of the same soul forming the obscure heart that is our love.”

Throughout history, toi et moi rings were set with two gems close to each other which translated to you and me and represented two souls becoming one. Kelly alludes to this feeling in his IG feel when he writes “I know tradition is one ring, but I designed it with Stephen Webster to be two: the emerald (her birthstone) and the diamond (my birthstone) set on two magnetic bands of thorns that draw together as two halves of the same soul forming the obscure heart that is our love.”

The most recognizable of the toi et moi rings features two stones of a similar size and cut. But during the 20th century and beyond, designers began to play with different cuts of gems.

The most famous toi et moi ring was the one with which Napoleon Bonaparte, who at the time was a soldier in the French army, proposed to Joséphine de Beauharnais. It is a opposite facing sapphire and a diamond pear shapes set in gold that were meant to look like hearts in those days. Since at the time Napoleon was a young officer, the ring was reported to be likely more than he could afford. They married approximately three weeks later in 1796. Napoleon was also reported to be completely smitten with Joséphine. The marriage didn’t last, but Josephine kept the ring and gave it to her daughter Hortense, later Queen of Holland, through whom it came down to her son, Napoleon III and his wife Empress Eugene. It went up for auction in France at Osenat House. The winning bidder, who wanted to stay completely anonymous, paid $949,000, almost 50 times the $20,000 Osenat had expected to bring in. Including the buyer’s 25 percent commission to Osenat, the total price for the ring was $1.17 million.

The stones in the antique rings are often paired to also symbolize different romantic emotions. The diamond for eternal love and the sapphire for fidelity, which is ironic as Joséphine’s infidelity was the reason for their divorce.

Other rings of the time were set with ruby for passion and diamond for eternal love or emerald for hope and prosperity and diamond, again for eternal love.

The trend has swept over the internet with posts of Toi et Moi rings on social media and will eventually turn up in every bridal magazine. Here are some that capture different feelings and different shaped stones. However any girl would swoon over the Stephen Webster version. It’s enough to make your heart skip a few beats.
