Meghan channelled rebel royal in dress with deep ‘symbolism’

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry sat down for an interview with Oprah Winfrey in 2021 and the Duchess of Sussex made a “very interesting” fashion choice for the occasion. She wore an Armani dress reminiscent of a gown the American socialite and divorcee Wallis Simpson donned for an official portrait in 1936. Wallis Simpson was considered a “rebel royal” and one of the most controversial Duchesses after the then-King Edward VIII abdicated the throne to marry her.

The similarities between Wallis Simpson and Meghan Markle are obvious and body language expert Jesus Enrique Rosas commented that “it’s very interesting to notice that Meghan chose a dress strikingly similar to the one worn by Wallis Simpson in one of her iconic photos”.

Wallis Simpson was in a romantic relationship with Edward, Prince of Wales, who abdicated the British throne in 1936 to marry her, “too much for being a coincidence,” the expert commented.

“And that white lotus on her dress… the lotus is a symbol of purity and rebirth,” body language guru Jesus added.

Meghan wore a black Armani wrap dress with a white lotus print adorning the right chest and shoulder for the controversial interview, where she and Prince Harry talked about their difficult time in the Royal Family.

Wallis Simpson was photographed for a portrait in 1936 also wearing a black wrap dress with a white floral design.

The lotus on Meghan’s dress has a deep symbolism, according to experts, as the flower has an “association with rebirth, self-regeneration and spiritual enlightenment, and its ability to flourish despite seemingly challenging conditions”.

Lotus is also considered a resilient flower despite the challenges and “with such refusal to accept defeat, it’s almost impossible not to associate this flower with unwavering faith,” Town & Country explained.

Personal stylist and image coach Melissa Lund commented on Meghan’s fashion choice: “The symbolism behind Meghan’s clothes choices is a really interesting topic.

“As a working royal, she wasn’t allowed to voice any political opinions (which she probably found difficult as she’s known as a campaigner), so she took the opportunity to let her clothes do the talking for her.”

The black Armani dress, however, has a symbolism that’s “impossible to miss”. The expert explained: “I guess that she chose this dress because for her, perhaps the Oprah interview gave her the chance as she put it to ‘tell her truth’.

“She’d moved to California with Harry, left the Royal Family behind and was creating a new life for herself, returning to acting perhaps, negotiating with Netflix, etc.”

Melissa commented it is “a bit like the Phoenix rising from the ashes”. Either that or “she just really liked the design!” she added.

The expert opined that “the wrap style would have been flattering and comfortable” as Meghan was then pregnant with Princess Lilibet.

The fashion expert added: “The white flower print draws the onlooker’s eye to the top of the body, which is always a good styling trick when you’re pregnant – get the attention up top with a pattern or jewellery.

“The black and white design also denotes authority. High contrast colours always give the wearer more gravitas and she would have wanted her words to be taken seriously during the interview.”

The Duchess of Sussex even opted for a similar hairstyle as both she and Wallis Simpson’s hair was parted in the centre and styled in a low bun.

Meghan also wore Princess Diana’s bracelets for the interview, as the couple wanted “Diana to be with them”, People reported.

The iconic dress was chosen by Dazed magazine and “worn to showcase a divine pregnancy,” is now “firmly ingrained in our pop culture psyche”.

“In today’s hyper-stylised pop culture, the Dress of the Year now has the potential to also be ‘meme of the year’ and we both latched upon Meghan and Harry’s now-iconic interview with Oprah as the definitive anti-establishment moment that will forever endure in the British collective consciousness,” the magazine commented.
