Meghan, Harry, Amber Heard, Hilaria Baldwin lead poll of most ‘annoying,’ tiresome celebrities of 2022

A splashy, multi-million-dollar Netflix special certainly gave Meghan Markle and Prince Harry a chance to spark a global conversation about their grievances against the British royal family and racism in the UK tabloid media.

But even with the couple’s ability to win glitzy humanitarian awards and command the loyalty of their Sussex Squad fans on social media, the constant news, tweets and think pieces about them has evidently made them tiresome to a large segment of the U.S. public. Meghan and Harry, respectively, have landed at No. 1 and 2 on Ranker’s online poll of “Celebrities You’re Sick of in 2022.”

As of Friday afternoon, Meghan received a total of 23,600 votes out of the more than 415,900 votes cast, while Harry received 20,967. The voting will continue through the New Year, though a Ranker spokesperson expects that interest in the poll will trail off after Jan. 1.

It also appears that Ranker voters would like to hear less from some of the Sussexes’ celebrity friends. Oprah Winfrey, Meghan and Harry’s Montecito neighbor and blockbuster-interview confessor came in at No. 3 on the poll, while late-night talk-show host James Corden came in fifth and Ellen DeGeneres, another Montecito neighbor, came in sixth.

In some ways, it’s mystifying that the Duchess and Duke of Sussex lead the list, given that others in the top 10 have arguably been more polarizing and, in one case, even harmful. Amber Heard landed at No. 4, while Chrissy Teigen came in eighth and Kanye West and his reality star ex-wife, Kim Kardashian, came in ninth and 10th, respectively.

West was largely canceled this year for his unhinged rants about loving Hitler and denying the Holocaust, while Heard became the target of vehement social media hate for accusing ex-husband Johnny Depp of domestic violence. Depp’s fans celebrated when a jury ruled that Heard had defamed the actor by writing a Washington Post op-ed that referred to herself as a domestic violence survivor, while feminists said she was a victim of vicious misogynist attacks.

The one person who could be said is an outlier among the top 10 on the list is Hilaria Baldwin, the wife of Alec Baldwin. The Instagram influencer isn’t a major star like the others and is only famous because of her marriage to Baldwin, long one of pop culture’s most divisive media personalities. Alec Baldwin also was much in the news over the last year for loudly proclaiming his innocence in the fatal shooting of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins on the set of his Western film, “Rust,” in late 2021.

On the other hand, Hilaria Baldwin has inspired ongoing animosity from people on social media for her Spanish heritage scandal and for constantly seeking attention by posting photos and videos depicting the private lives of her seven young children.

This Ranker list actually was first posted at the beginning of 2022 and is ongoing, spokesperson Drew Shane said. Over the past year, stars have risen or fallen on the poll, depending on whether they’ve been in the news. For example, in the early part of 2022, Will Smith had fallen as low as No. 112, but his name shot up to No. 1 in the days following the Academy Awards, when he slapped Chris Rock on stage after the comedian cracked a joke about his wife’s bald head. Will Smith was No. 13, as of Friday afternoon.

So, yes, there is some recency bias involved, which could explain the reason that Meghan and Harry occupy the top spots, just a couple of weeks after their Netflix docuseries was released on the streaming service, Shane said. Other than that, Shane said Ranker doesn’t have any big theories about why certain stars are high up on the list and others are not, including someone as much in the news as Elon Musk.

Starting with No. 11, the other celebrities that Ranker’s poll said people are sick of include Madonna, Kylie Jenner, Will Smith, Mark Zuckerberg, Kris Jenner, Trevor Noah, Khloe Kardashian, James Charles, Travis Scott and Bill Cosby.

Drew said that the majority of voters – about 75% – come from the United States, while the rest come from the United Kingdom, Australia and Europe. Data about voters’ age, gender or political or socio-economic background was not available, so it’s hard to know whether U.S. conservatives, who are known to be highly critical of Meghan and certain other liberal-leaning celebrities, are responsible for some of those people being on the list.

When it comes to Meghan specifically, Newsweek royal correspondent Jack Royston argued this week that the former TV actress is losing the American public’s sympathy. Royston, who is known for his favorable coverage of the Sussexes, said that Meghan has been the subject of increasingly critical coverage in the U.S. media, which may help explain why she scores so high among weary Ranker voters.

This week, Politico ignited a firestorm when contributing editor Joanna Weiss penned an essay that labeled Meghan a narcissist, Royston noted. This is a frequent criticism of the duchess, but Weiss took things further by saying that her need for attention is akin to the narcissism that prompted West’s antisemitic rants, Elon Musk’s destruction of  Twitter, Donald Trump’s alleged incitement of the Jan. 6 insurrection to stay in the White House and Elizabeth Holmes’ choice to defraud investors.

Earlier this month, a chief media analyst at the usually Sussex-friendly Variety magazine also blasted the couple for their Netflix series and offered up reasons that some in the public may be getting sick of the couple, Royston also said.

“It’s not that Harry and Meghan don’t have a story worth telling; the prejudice they faced from the royal family and the British press was awful,” wrote Andrew Wallenstein.

“But telling the story ad nauseam has diminishing returns,” he continued. “At some point, even the dimmest of minds among their fans is going to tire of their ‘Oh, woe is us’ routine as they play the victim card again and again. That’s a tone-deaf message to be sending from their posh Montecito estate at a time of economic insecurity around the world.”
