Meghan Markle allegedly wanted to be “top dog” in the royal family but Princess Kate was the star, claims an ex-pal of the Duchess of Sussex.
Lizzy Cundy, who became friends with Markle in 2013 at a charity dinner, told the Daily Mirror that the former actress wrongly believed she would take the Princess of Wales’ spot as boss when she married Prince Harry in 2018.
It’s been suggested that Markle planned to outshine her sister-in-law one day, but Princess Kate’s popularity and authority in the royal family blocked her.
Cundy also addressed rumours Markle and Prince Harry are heading for a divorce and shared her opinion on their relationship.
She said: “I don’t want to see any couples split up when any marriage falls apart it’s sad, especially when you have children.”
She continued: “We could all see the writing was on the wall, it’s very different when you’re a celebrity princess than being a royal princess and frankly Meghan just wasn’t up for the job.
“She didn’t want to put the hard work in opening hospitals and doing all the roles that royals do, it’s not easy it’s not glamorous, it’s not like on the red carpet.
“I think Meghan thought she was going to be the top dog star of the show and Princess Kate was always going to have that role.”
Cundy also made similar remarks to Grazia in 2021. She said the Duchess was “open” that “she wanted fame.”
Earlier this week, reports claimed that Prince Harry and Markle, who now live in California, was now “taking time apart.” However, a source has since denied the rumour.
They told Page Six, “It’s not true. It’s literally made up.”
Rumours of a split between the Duke and Duchess of Sussex began on social media earlier this month.
A viral tweet claimed Markle has “filed divorce papers asking for $80 million plus the total custody of Archie and Lilibet.”
DeuxMoi, a gossip Instagram account, published an anonymous tip recently claiming the couple had “sold their mansion in Montecito” and Harry was “living in another place.”
The Sussexes have experieneced a number of professional setbacks recently. In June, Spotify terminated their $19 million deal and confirmed it would not be renewing Markle’s podcast, Archetypes, which has only aired 12 episodes since its launch in August.
On top of that, the couple still aren’t on great terms with King Charles and the rest of the royal family.
