Meghan Markle found it difficult to abandon her social media accounts when she joined the Royal Family, a royal commentator has claimed.
The Duchess of Sussex became a member of the working royals when she married Prince Harry in May 2018.
Before meeting the prince, Meghan ran her own lifestyle blog, ‘The Tig’, where she shared tips and insight on topics including wellness and beauty. But, this was closed when the Californian began dating Harry in 2016.
And, when the couple moved across the Atlantic, they also shut down their royal social media profiles.
There have been rumours that the now ex-royal might restart her blog following the success of Gwyneth Paltrow’s ‘Goop’ brand, and now royal commentator Neil Sean has claimed that Meghan found life tricky without social media.
“Meghan really struggled, allegedly, with the removal of her social media. She really liked to interact on that, and she also had ‘The Tig’ blog,” Neil claimed, speaking on his YouTube channel.
“But the bigger problem was the fact that she wasn’t allowed to have a political voice. This was the big problem allegedly.
“He [Prince Harry] apparently did try to explain the reasons why politics and royalty do not mix.
“As we all know, the royals are not allowed to vote or speak about current government policies.”
After a relatively short stint as working royals, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex stepped down from royal duties in 2020 and now reside in Montecito, California, having taken on a number of new ventures.
And, in one controversial move, Meghan penned a letter to US Congress calling for paid parental leave across the country.
The Duchess of Sussex signed this letter using her royal moniker, and some commentators have claimed that this action might have marked the start of a transition into politics for the former royal.
Neil agreed, noting that following these recent steps towards expressing a political voice, Meghan is likely to be distinguishing herself from royal life.
“The deeper she gets into politics, the further away from the British monarchy she will be because she seemingly will then have to give up that royal title,” he added.
Daily Star has contacted Meghan’s representatives for comment.
