Melania Trump on Tuesday hit out at “assumptions” about her stance on personal and political matters but she didn’t mention the name of her husband Donald Trump or say whether she supports him as he campaigns for president or as he fights criminal charges in New York and deals with state and federal investigations elsewhere.
The Office of Melania Trump issued a short statement on its Twitter account early Tuesday that was characteristically allusive for the 52-year-old former model who became known for cultivating an aura of mystery while in the White House. The statement said: “News organizations have made assumptions about the former first lady’s stance on subjects that are personal, professional, and political over the past few weeks. In these articles, unnamed sources are cited to bolster the author’s claims.”
“We ask readers to exercise caution and good judgment when determining whether or not stories concerning the former first lady are accurate, particularly when they fail to cite Mrs. Trump as a source of information,” the statement concluded.
It’s true that People, Page Six and other entertainment and news outlets have published a number of stories in recent weeks that cite anonymous sources. The sources have said that Melania Trump is “angry” but still “supportive” of her husband because he’s “family,” as the former president faces prosecution in New York on 34 felony counts, stemming from his alleged affairs with porn star Stormy Daniels and Playboy Playmate Karen McDougal.
On Monday, Page Six cited more anonymous sources who explained why Melania Trump suddenly turned up by her husband’s side at Mar-a-Lago for Easter brunch Sunday — after she was “glaringly” absent from his historic arraignment in New York last week and his post-arraignment speech in the Mar-a-Lago ballroom.
The source said that the beleaguered former president basically begged his wife to help him out.
“He told her, ‘I really need you for this because we are going to be campaigning,’” the source said. “They had a major talk over the weekend, and she has … agreed to be on board.”
So, on Sunday, the former first couple were seen having brunch together at his Palm Beach, Florida, residence and private club, Page Six, Vanity Fair and other outlets said. Witnesses told Page Six the duo received a standing ovation when they entered the ballroom. They then sat together behind a velvet rope, where Melania Trump was seen leaning in to converse with her 76-year-old husband.
An insider told Page Six: “She wanted just to be alone with him; that was her request.”
The source added: “The fact it was the two of them alone was a big statement. This was a statement (saying), ‘We are together, I stand by my husband.’”
Melania Trump’s Sunday appearance was accompanied by a festive-sounding tweet that was as noncommittal as her statement Tuesday. “Happy Easter!” the tweet said, according to Page Six, accompanied by a photo of a rose.
But that Easter brunch may be one of Melania Trump’s only public appearances going forward, an anonymous source told People. Apparently, she remains uncomfortable being in the spotlight when it comes to her husband’s political campaigning or legal crises.
“Melania’s normally quiet and in-the-background manner has served her well in the series of scandals plaguing her husband,” the source told People. “I assume this will continue.”
But as Melania Trump lashes out at the use of anonymous sources, people willing to go on the record have weighed in on her possible state of mind. Former close friend Stephanie Winston Wolkoff said she’s probably in “denial” about Trump’s various legal problems.

“Melania lives in an ivory tower of denial,” Winston Wolkoff told Page Six last week. Winston Wolkoff also was once Melania Trump’s unpaid White House aide, but the women had a falling out and Winston Wolkoff wrote a scathing account of her ex-friend in her 2020 book, “Melania and Me: The Rise and Fall of My Friendship with the First Lady.”
Winston Wolkoff told Page Six that Melania Trump has always known about her husband’s affairs. “She knows everything. But her silence is her dignity,” Winston Wolkoff said, adding that she doesn’t think Melania Trump will leave him.
“She will stand by her husband, as she always does. I don’t think Melania is humiliated by his affairs — but she is angry,” Winston Wolkoff told Page Six. “Still, she isn’t leaving him. This is a transactional marriage, she knew what she was getting into when she married Donald. Her means of survival is to just act like it never happened.”
Stormy Daniels also speculated on what the former first lady is dealing with. The adult film actor said she truly feels “bad” for Melania Trump and would happily testify at her divorce proceedings.
But Daniels also echoed some of what Melania Trump’s office put out Tuesday, by saying: “I would assume that she doesn’t need me or anyone else to speak for her. Perhaps her not speaking is her speaking. Silence speaks volumes, if you will.”
“We don’t know what is in their private life,” Daniels continued. “We don’t know what goes on behind the doors. We don’t know what kind of arrangement they had. I know some freaky people — we don’t know. We can sit here and talk about it all day long, but until she feels the need to speak for herself, then we just won’t know.”
At the same time, Daniels expressed sympathy for Melania Trump being a mother to 17-year-old Barron. “I would assume that just like me, as a mother, her main priority is her child.”
