The One, an upcoming horror movie from Hanway Film, has secured its lead stars. THR reports that Melissa Barrera, who recently reprised her Scream role in Scream VI, has taken one of the lead roles in The One alongside Renfield star Nicholas Hoult. Also starring in the movie will be Lana Condor (To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before). Kevin Armento and Jaki Bradley will write and direct the film. Hoult is serving as a producer on the project as well alongside Whitaker Lader under their Dead Duck Films banner. Also producing are Riley Keough and Gina Gammell for Felix Culpa.
“We’ve been dreaming up this project for years, and are thrilled to now bring it to life with our actual dream team,” Armento and Bradley said in a statement. “Nick, Melissa, Riley, and Lana are some of the most exciting talents around, and their passion for this film — shared by our incredible producing — has us even more eager to make this nightmare a reality.”
Hould and Lader add, “We were immediately drawn to this project that we think will be equally appealing to reality TV junkies and those who think it is a scourge on humanity. Jaki & Kevin’s script & vision promise a wild and deliciously dark film that will make audiences cringe, laugh, and question their own complicity.”
The new film is described as an “erotic nightmare,” imagining a worst case scenario for someone who goes looking for love on a reality dating show. In the movie, Barrera plays Taylor, a young woman who makes a last-ditch effort to find love by joining a reality dating television show. The competition gets down to Taylor and two other contestants, all of whom are hoping to be chosen as “the one” by Mason (Hoult). However, “amidst the opulent beachfront setting, fairytale dates and ever-flowing champagne, pursuit turns into obsession and rivalry turns into treachery as reality itself blurs.” The official description further teases that the film is a “nightmarish horror about the romantic and psychological warfare waged by our beloved popular entertainment — and also begs the question… are we, the viewers, complicit?”
Melissa Barrera Has Become a Horror Fan Favorite
Barrera has become a fan favorite in the horror genre as of late. She is well known for her role as Samantha Carpenter in the Scream movies, having recently reprised that role for Scream VI, which became the highest-grossing installment of the franchise. She also recently starred in the Tubi horror film Bed Rest, which also marked her debut as a producer. Barrera will also appear in the upcoming horror romance film Your Monster and was just recently cast for a role in a new monster movie from the Scream VI filmmakers.
Hoult has also certainly made his mark in the genre. Of course, he plays the titular character in Renfield alongside Nicolas Cage as a new incarnation of Dracula. The actor, who previously played a zombie in the horror-comedy film Warm Bodies, has also been cast in the upcoming remake of the vampire classic Nosferatu from Robert Eggers. Meanwhile, he has also been cast for a role in Juror #2, the movie that will serve as the final film to be directed by Clint Eastwood.
