Following a facelift of its GLE crossovers earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz is continuing up the alphabet chain and turning its attention to the hulking GLS. Set to be offered in a number of styles from pedestrian GLS 450 up to Maybach GLS 600 and AMG GLS 63, this top-tier machine earns some new exterior style to accompany a revamped interior for the upcoming model year.

First up, unsurprisingly, is a more prominent grille. The quartet of louvers on the GLS are galvanized in a silver motif, adding to the visual drama of a newly styled front bumper that’s more prominent and has sprouted some integrated air inlets. Maybach variants get vertical chrome bars in this area plus branded lettering, while the powerful AMG gets a typically aggro face with trim-specific light signatures. New taillamp designs also alert the neighbours that you have the most recent model.

Seven seats are standard inside the GLS, now offered in a raft of hues including two new brown options. Trim finishes have also been juggled and include some selections formerly reserved for Maybach customers.
Speaking of, that limo-on-wheels gets its own colourways and upholstery, along with rear-seat options like a multi-seat entertainment system which offers those in the back equal infotainment and comfort features as people sitting up front. AMG clients receive special seats, plus features such as an instrument panel are upholstered in Nappa leather. All hands are upgraded to the latest MBUX software.

Those keen of eye will notice the steering wheel now deploys touch controls on its spokes, ditching physical buttons for items which can presumably change function depending on drive mode or owner preference. Not everyone will love this change, but it falls squarely in the don’t-knock-it-‘til-ya-try-it category. Also added across the board are a yaffle of USB ports and updated display options in the gauge and infotainment clusters.

Different options reside under the hood, depending on trim selected. Starting with the GLS 450, we find a 3.0L engine good for 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, while bumping up to the GLS 580 brings 510 ponies and 538 lb-ft of twist.
One-per-centers in the Maybach GLS 600 will enjoy a 550-horsepower experience (with equal torque as the GLS 580). Finally, anyone choosing the AMG GLS 63 will find themselves holding the keys to a 4.0L V8 biturbo engine making 603 horsepower and 627 torques. Every new GLS sold in Canada, regardless of trim, packs 4Matic all-wheel-drive.
The upgraded Mercedes-Benz GLS will arrive in Canadian dealerships this autumn.
