It’s been a while since Mercedes-Benz has put some new letters on the back of its models, but now for 2024 it gives us the CLE Coupe and Cabriolet. The German automaker says the new models use the “conceptual and technical innovations” of both the C-Class and E-Class, which accounts for this name combining both of those letters.

The CLE Coupe will go on sale in Canada early in 2024, with pricing announced closer to launch, while the convertible will arrive around the middle of that year.

Mercedes-Benz says the two-door is the largest midsize coupe available, with a 25-mm longer wheelbase than the C-Class Coupe that gives it more headroom and legroom in the rear seat over that model. The trunk can hold three golf bags.

Styling cues include a new three-dimensional grille, flat LED headlights, large wheel arches, two-piece LED taillights, and a body line that visually joins the front and rear lights across the top of the door handle.

The cabin includes a standard 12.3-inch free-standing centre screen, with the third generation of MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) infotainment from the E-Class. The instrument cluster is an 11.9-inch tablet-style screen. The sport-style seats are unique to the CLE, including a leather loop atop the back rest to fold them for rear-seat access; while 64-colour ambient lighting is standard, and in Canada, options will include a Burmester 3D surround system that puts two speakers each into the front head restraints.

In Canada, the new model will be sold as the CLE 300 4Matic, with turbocharged 3.0L four-cylinder, making 255 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque and mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. It includes a mild-hybrid system with integrated starter-generator (ISG) and 48-volt electrical system, which provides fuel-free boost or coasting to improve fuel economy. All-wheel-drive is standard.

Globally, the CLE will offer a 3.0L inline-six-cylinder as its most powerful engine, for 375 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, and while Mercedes-Benz Canada has not said anything more about it than that—well, it was mentioned, and both the C-Class and E-Class Coupe come in an AMG version, so—we’ll see what might happen.

That said, there will be an AMG Line that includes unique interior materials and stiffer suspension. Other standard or available features will include 18- to 20-inch wheels, ten exterior colours, open-pore wood or metal-weave accents, 64-colour ambient lighting, ventilated and massaging seats, head-up display, and hands-free trunk lid.
