Lionel Messi scored the fastest goal of his entire career during Argentina’s 2-0 win over Australia in a friendly match on Thursday.

The Argentina captain curled home inside 120 seconds to give the South Americans the lead. From then, the world champions were in cruise control with Australia playing on the back foot.

Argentina substitute German Pezzella doubled their lead with a header in the 68th minute to give them a 2-0 win at the Workers’ Stadium in Beijing.

Messi dominates Australia in a friendly

The 35-year-old led Argentina to World Cup glory last year in Qatar where they defeated France on penalties.

On Tuesday, Messi told Chinese media that he “doesn’t think” he will play at another World Cup.

The star, who just signed with Major League Soccer club Inter Miami, is in China ahead of Argentina’s friendly match against Australia.

“I have said several times before that I don’t think so, that that (2022) was my last World Cup,” he said when asked by China’s Titan Sports he might feature at the 2026 tournament in North America.

“I will see how things go but in theory I don’t think I will be around for the next World Cup,” he added in Spanish in the video published on the app Kuaishou.

Although Messi is unlikely to feature in another World Cup, the former Barcelona favourite says he still enjoys playing for his country as a ‘champion.’
