Cleaning an oven regularly avoids any longer term build up, including burnt-on food as well as grease. However, this can be a time consuming job which is easily forgotten about. Experts at Checkatrade recommended cleaning your oven at least once a month to keep it in top condition, and there are several methods you can use.
Before beginning to clean an oven, make sure to have all of the tools to hand needed. This includes gloves, a bucket, washing up liquid, scouring pad, baking soda, white vinegar, glass scraper and some microfibre cloths.
Also make sure to grab some no-scratch scouring pads, some glass cleaner, and some lemons.
1. Oven door
The experts explained: “As most ovens have a cool-to-touch glass pane on the exterior and an inner pane, dirt and food often find their way through the cracks.
“Consequently, you might need to remove the door and panes to scrub away any grease or grime. To clean the glass, fill up a bucket with hot water and washing up liquid.

“Put on your gloves before dipping your microfibre cloth into the water. Give the glass a wipe down to dislodge the dirt and repeat until the grime is gone.
“If this doesn’t work, try a glass cleaner too. However, if you’re stuck with baked-on residue, you might need a glass scraper.”
Always check this is safe before using. If there is a coating on the glass, a scraper might damage this protective layer.
2. Roof of an oven
As the roof of the oven is at an awkward angle, cleaning it can be trickier and is often one of the most neglected parts of the oven.
Thankfully, there are two “easy ways” to clean the roof that doesn’t require much skill to be able to do.
The pros said: “The first is to use a gel cleaner and brush it on with a paintbrush. The other is to put an oven proof tray filled with hot water and lemon and leave it on a low heat for about an hour.
“This helps dislodge any stubborn grime, making it easier to wipe away with a sponge and some warm soapy water.”
The entire oven can also be cleaned using baking soda and white vinegar, according to the experts.

This involves mixing half a cup of baking soda and half a cup of water to make a paste before removing oven racks and any other items.
Paint the paste over the entire oven and leave it for at least 12 hours, but ideally overnight. Next, take some hot soapy water and use a microfibre cloth to clean off the paste.
Add some white vinegar to a spray bottle and spray throughout the oven to help remove any baking soda residue.
3. Oven tray
There are several ways to clean an oven tray, but the experts shared the most “superior” method ever, which involved baking soda and white vinegar.
To start with, pour one cup of white vinegar and half a cup of baking soda into the sink and top it up with hot water.
Submerge the baking tray and leave it to soak for around 30 to 40 minutes before using a microfibre cloth or a non-scratch scouring pad to scrub the tray.
Repeat the steps until the tray is as good as new before placing it back into the spotless oven.
The experts continued: “If you’re wondering whether you should hire an oven cleaner or do the job yourself, we recommend assessing the job at hand and working out whether it requires a thorough or simple clean.
“For example, if you’re looking for an end of tenancy clean, landlords often check the oven and other appliances before giving you your deposit back.
“In this case, it is worth spending the little extra to ensure a professional job is done on the property.”
