Miami NCAA Tournament history: What’s the farthest the Hurricanes have gone in March Madness?

0

The Miami Hurricanes are in the Elite Eight for the second straight year after beating the No. 1 Houston Cougars. What is the furthest Miami has gone in the NCAA Tournament?

The 2023 men’s NCAA Tournament started off with 68 teams, seeking to win the national championship. Now, there are going to be eight teams remaining entering this weekend. Ever since seeding took place in the NCAA Tournament in 1979, there are no No. 1 seeds left entering the Elite Eight for the first time ever.

That is thanks in part to the Miami Hurricanes.

After the Alabama Crimson Tide fell to the No. 5 San Diego State Aztecs earlier on Friday, the Houston Cougars were the lone remaining No. 1 seed. That feat didn’t last very long, as Miami easily dispatched of them by the score of 89-75. With this, the Hurricanes are now in the Elite Eight.

For those wondering how far Miami has made it in the NCAA Tournament in their program’s history, we have the answer for you.

What is the furthest Miami has made it in the NCAA Tournament?

The furthest the Hurricanes have made it in March Madness is, ironically, the Elite Eight. Never have they made it to the national championship game, let alone the Final Four.

Miami has made it to the Elite Eight just two times, and they happened in 2022 and 2023 under head coach Jim Larrañaga.

Last year, the Hurricanes made it to the Elite Eight after defeating the No. 7 USC Trojans, No. 2 Auburn Tigers, and No. 11 Iowa State Cyclones. But in that round, they lost to the No. 1 Kansas Jayhawks, who eventually went on to win the entire tournament.

This year, Miami beat No. 12 Drake Bulldogs, No. 4 Indiana Hoosiers, and No. 1 Houston to reach the Elite Eight. They will face the winner between No. 2 Texas and No. 3 Xavier. Miami will look to make it to the Final Four for the first time in their program’s history.
