Miami University in Oxford, Ohio has received the largest gift in the institution’s history – a $46 million bequest from alumnus John Metz ’57 and his husband, Ali Khan.

The entirety of the gift will be used to fund scholarships for students at the University who are eligible for Pell Grants. Currently, according to the University’s news release, about 2,000 students – or 11% of those enrolled at the Oxford campus – receive the Federal Pell grant.

“Miami University is grateful to John and Ali for their extraordinary generosity,” Miami University President Gregory Crawford said. “This gift is especially transformative because it is designated to students with the greatest need. This means that more students will have access to a Miami education. This gift will impact the lives of students and their families for generations to come.”

The gift marks the official start of Miami University’s $1 billion capital campaign, “For love. For honor. For those who will,” which began “silently” in 2016. According to the Cincinnati Enquirer, about half of the $ 1 billion has been raised. As part of the overall campaign, Miami has set a goal of raising:

  • $450 million for student scholarships,
  • $150 million for clinical health sciences,
  • $300 million for business and entrepreneurship,
  • $100 million for digital innovation and technology.

“These are areas where the university has already made significant investments, and where, through philanthropic support, Miami can be best in class. Underlying all of this is our number one priority — scholarships. We must ensure that deserving students from all backgrounds have access to a Miami education for generations to come,” President Crawford said.

Metz, a retired employee relations executive, graduated from Miami with a bachelor’s degree in business economics in 1957.

This is not the first gift made to Miami by Metz and Kahn. Metz’s philanthropy for Miami University began in 2007 with a $5 million bequest for the class gift that marked the 50-year reunion for the Class of 1957. He and Khan later established the John Metz and Ali Khan Scholarship Fund in 2019.

“Ali and I are proud to help young people who are aspiring to achieve better lives and hope they are successful in their goals,” Metz said.
