According to the auctioneers, Sir Michael has started “taking life at a more leisurely pace” so he and his wife, Lady Caine, are downsizing and putting some of their treasured possessions up for auction.

The sale, which is set to raise hundreds of thousands of pounds, contains a selection of items reflecting the breadth of Sir Michael’s career, ranging from movie posters for films including Zulu and Alfie, furniture including his own desk and even a pair of his iconic spectacles (estimate: £800-1200).

Sir Michael said: “It’s going to be quite a wrench to part with so many treasured parts of my life and career, but it’s the right time to be moving on. I hope these mementoes will give their new owners as much pleasure as they have given us.”

Other items fans can buy include a 1970 Tony Award autographed page and medallion which is framed and bearing signatures including Michael Caine, Julie Andrews, Mia Farrow, Barbra Streisand, James Stewart and Maggie Smith(Estimate: £1,000-1,500).

Sir Michael, 88, has appeared in more than 130 films in a career spanning six decades and won a Golden Globe for his part in Educating Rita and an Oscar for his performance in Woody Allen’s Hannah and her sisters.

Speaking in May last year Sir Michael told how he had changed his lifestyle and cut down drinking to try to live longer to spend more time with his grandchildren.

He said: “I’ve decided to live a bit longer. I’ve cut down on the drink and got a new outlook on life. I thought I wasn’t going to have grandchildren, and suddenly I have three.

“They’re my fountain of youth and they’ve given me a whole new lease of life without any of the worries or troubles. I’m completely besotted and so is my wife.

“I’ve had some high points in my life – I’ve won two Academy Awards and I’ve been given a knighthood, and I used to think that you couldn’t get better that that. But you can, because then I got my grandchildren, which is better than anything. The wonderful thing about grandchildren is something someone once said, which is they fill a hole in your heart which you didn’t know was empty. And I think that’s absolutely true.”
