Phil Jones has been included in Manchester United’s matchday squad for their Premier League clash with Chelsea on Sunday.
The 29-year-old is yet to make an appearance for United this season due to injury and has only been named as a substitute in the defeat to West Ham in the Carabao Cup in December.
Jones has been working his way back to full fitness by playing for United’s Under-23s and could now make his first senior Premier League appearance for the first time in 22 months.
Jones also travelled with United’s squad for their Champions League tie against Villarreal earlier this week, even though he is ineligible to play in the competition.
Michael Carrick will already be without Harry Maguire, who is suspended after he was sent off in the 4-1 defeat to Watford last weekend, which turned out to be the end of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reign.
Raphael Varane is also unavailable due to injury, meaning that United are likely to start Victor Lindelof and Eric Bailly as their centre-back pairing.
Elsewhere, Fred also travelled with United’s squad to London after being labelled as an injury doubt.
‘Fred twisted his ankle the other night, he managed to carry on, which was pretty incredible, to be honest, seeing the game out and playing a big part in winning the game for us,’ said Michael Carrick.
‘We’ll have to see how that settles down.’
United have lost five of their last seven Premier League fixtures ahead of their trip to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea, meanwhile, are flying under Thomas Tuchel as they head into the fixture off the back of a 4-0 victory over Juventus in the Champions League.
