The Miami Heat are on their way to the NBA Finals after defeating the Boston Celtics in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference Finals. One of the heroes of that Game 7 was Caleb Martin, who scored 26 points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the decisive win.

Martin is in his second season with the Heat, but spent the first two years of his career with the Charlotte Hornets. Martin was a role player during his time with Charlotte, often seeing the floor as a reserve.

The team clearly didn’t see a future with him as he was released back in 2021, a move that opened up the door for him to sign with Miami. The decision to waive Martin was an afterthought for most NBA fans at the time, but with his role in the Heat’s trip to the Finals, some fans are questioning why owner Michael Jordan let him go.

Martin was a hero for the Heat during their run to the Finals, and narrowly missed winning the Larry Bird Trophy as Eastern Conference Finals MVP. The award went to his teammate Jimmy Butler, but no one who watched the series could deny Martin’s consistency throughout the seven-game series.

As the Charlotte Hornets prepare once again to pick early in the NBA Draft, Michael Jordan is likely regretting the decision to let Martin go.
