Michael Kay caught some heat this week for his comments about a bat boy during the Yankees-Guardians game and he’s not too happy about it.
Monday night in Cleveland, Kay critiqued the appearance of the bat boy in the Yankees’ dugout, saying it went against former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner‘s “Neatness Counts” policy that was implemented in 1976.
“If the players aren’t allowed, I don’t know if the bat boy should be allowed,” Kay commentated. “There are rules. Rules are rules. He’s disobeying two of them. I think there’s facial hair, and, obviously, the hair is below the collar.”
On Tuesday, Kay said he spoke to the bat boy — whose name is Nate — about the hubbub over his appearance, noting his hair was tucked into his helmet, adding “[Nate] found all the uproar from social media kinda humorous yesterday.”
Per Kay, Yankees slugger Anthony Rizzo is the one who suggested Nate put his hair into his helmet.
The topic was broached on Wednesday’s episode of “The Michael Kay Show,” in which Kay claimed he was joking about the bat boy.

“Hey listen, I didn’t write the long article in the New York Post about you,” co-host Peter Rosenberg said after Kay started passionately defending himself.
“I had something to say about the bat boy? I said it didn’t fit, it’s against the Yankees’ rules. I didn’t say anything about the kid,” Kay responded. “People on Twitter are saying ‘Old man Kay giving this kid smoke.’ I’m not giving anybody smoke!
“This is really an awful time. It’s an awful time. It’s an awful time in our history as a planet, it really is, and as a human race. Everybody sucks. I’m telling you, they really do. To dig into something like that and say I attacked someone. I didn’t attack anybody!”

Kay ended his rant with an emphatic statement.
“I’d like to ruffle some people’s faces!”
It will be interesting to see if Kay’s dedication to defending Steinbrenner’s “Neatness Count” policy continues or if he’ll shy away a bit more after this blow up.
