Michael Owen insists he remains to be fully convinced by Liverpool’s matchwinner against Wolves, Divock Origi.

The Belgium striker has again been forced to settle for a bit-part role this season but enhanced his cult hero status with the 94th minute goal that sent the Reds, temporarily, top of the table.

Jurgen Klopp’s side looked likely to miss out on taking full advantage of Chelsea’s surprise defeat at West Ham earlier on Saturday, but Origi came up trumps again with decisive late intervention on what was his 100th substitute appearance for the Merseyside club.

The 26-year-old is likely to be called upon on a more regular basis in January while Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane are on international duty at the Africa Cup of Nations, but Owen claims he is often left disappointed when the striker is included in Klopp’s starting line-up.

He said: ‘Whenever he starts I must admit he disappoints me. You’ll say what about Barcelona in the Champions League and things like that.

‘Of course he’s had the most unbelievable moments in a red shirt but overall when he starts he disappoints me. Overall I think he’s an impact player but he might get a few more starts now especially during January.’

Klopp, meanwhile, was thrilled with Origi’s contribution and hailed a player, who has come close to leave Liverpool on numerous occasions, as a ‘legend’.

He said: ‘It’s great, [Divock Origi’s] a legend. He is a legend. People will write books about him, hopefully. If not then I’ll do it.

‘He’s such a great player, a great guy. It’s a good moment, coming on and contributing like he did today, scoring that goal – outstanding. I’m really, really happy for him.

‘If you don’t take your chances, it happens pretty often were you go home with one point, or if they use one of their rare counter-attacks, you go home with nothing, which would have been incredibly unfair from our point of view, obviously.

‘This is now the right result, I think. We had the majority of the ball, we were very dominant, we didn’t let them play how they usually play. It was a football-playing side to not really be seen today because we were really at them.’
