Michael ‘Venom’ Page explains why Leon Edwards may never get a UFC title shot

Michael ‘Venom’ Page doesn’t believe Leon Edwards will ever be given a shot at the UFC title.

Edwards has amassed one of the most impressive winning records in the promotion and is currently ranked third in the welterweight rankings.

A unanimous decision win over Nate Diaz, the UFC’s first ever five-round non-title fight in June, further underlined his credentials but his wait for a world title shot goes on.

His last defeat came against current champion Kamaru Usman 10 fights ago – with Colby Covington next in line against ‘The Nigerian Nightmare’ in November.

Edwards’ next fight could be against Jorge Masvidal in the culmination of a bitter rivalry that was sparked at UFC London in 2019 when the two came to blows backstage at the O2 Arena.

Page, who takes on Douglas Lima in a huge rematch at Bellator 267 on Friday, insists he and other fighters must continue to strive to stand out from the crowd in a hugely competitive field.

And with self-promotion so key to the business, the Londoner suggests Edwards will continue to be overlooked for fighters who are making ‘a lot of noise’.

‘He has killed some great fighters, but he will never get a title shot,’ Page told Metro.co.uk, before referring to that clash with Masvidal.

‘His biggest moment in MMA was getting sucker punched by another MMA fighter. That’s disgusting.

‘That does show he is not branding himself correctly, maybe it’s not in his personality but I think he just cares more about the fight, which I get and he is great at it but he needs to understand it is a partnership that needs to be at hand here and he needs to be a bit more aware of that.

‘It’s disappointing because I want him to do well and I know he’s a sick fighter, I have sparred him before, worked with him before but I don’t see him blowing up in the same way because if you are not drawing in those people then promoters are not going to care for you.’

He continued: ‘That affects your career. If you are not drawing in those people, those promoters are not going to care enough to promote you. They might pick this guy who has only had two fights in the UFC but is making a lot of noise and think: ‘We will give him the title fight instead’.

It is wrong, but as a promoter, I get why they would make that decision over what is technically right.’
