Michigan State cancels all athletic events for the next 48 hours after on-campus shooting.

Our hearts go out to the entire Michigan State family after a terrifying on-campus shooting.

Late into the night on Monday evening, a gunman fatally shot three people on campus, seriously wounding five others, all of whom are in critical condition. The gunman was a 43-year-old who had no affiliation with the university. He took his own life hours after the tragic events in East Lansing. The university and the entire state of Michigan is in mourning over the senseless act.

The Spartans will not take part in athletic competitions over the next 48 hours. These cancellations include the men’s basketball team’s home game vs. Minnesota on Feb. 15, the men’s tennis team that was slated to host Drake that evening and probably in all likelihood, the women’s basketball team road game at Purdue on the same day as well. This feels like a very fluid situation.

Interim deputy police chief Chris Rozman said a 48-hour cancelation window is subject to change.

This is the right call across the board for the university. While athletics are a great way to bring a community together after being torn apart by tragedy, we have to allow the grieving process to begin first. Although more information will come out about this senseless act of violence that took the lives of three innocent people, now is not the time to play or host athletic events on campus.

The men’s basketball team’s next game would be at arch-rival Michigan on Saturday night. Could the Spartans make the trek to Ann Arbor? The women’s team would host Maryland on Saturday afternoon in East Lansing. As for the men’s tennis team, their next match would be at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg on Friday night. We will have to pay close attention to what the university decides.

FanSided will keep you up to date on the horrific event that took place in East Lansing on Monday.
