This seems like a very interesting and potentially game-changing announcement, especially since the PlayStation 5 is still experiencing high customer demand over two years since its release. However, some might question its actual purpose in the FTC’s suit against Microsoft. Was this an internal faux paus on a piece of heavily embargoed news, or could this be an intentional reveal to downplay Microsoft’s biggest competitor?
If you have been paying attention to the developments surrounding this suit, you’ll know that the PlayStation 6 has become a well-documented part of it. That’s because Sony first acknowledged the model back in March 2023, when it filed a complaint to the U.K.’s Competition and Markets Authority over the bid. The institution, otherwise known as the CMA, has also challenged Microsoft’s proposal in court, with Sony writing that the purchase could shut its next console out of “Call of Duty” installments and other Activision Blizzard-produced games by 2027.
No matter the intention behind this piece of news, it’s cool that Sony is seemingly hard at work developing a brand-new gaming console. At the same time, though, it’s important to recognize the potentially shady tactics behind this new leak, as it could be used to divert attention away from the FTC hearing.
