Last October, NBA broadcaster Mike Breen’s family home on Long Island was destroyed in a tragic fire.
Thankfully, no one was home at the time, so no lives were lost. But the Breens had many valuable and meaningful possessions destroyed in the blaze, which was caused by a “careless disposal of staining material.”
One piece of memorabilia that somehow survived the ordeal was a customized “Gray Mamba” jersey ESPN gifted him a few years ago, which he had signed by Lakers star Kobe Bryant.
Bryant had inscribed the jersey with “From one Mamba to another.” Breen thought the keepsake was gone forever, but, as he recounted to The Athletic, his wife somehow found it among the ruins and refurbished it.
“Mrs. Breen had another epic salvage up her sleeve,” wrote The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson II. “It was discovered among the ashes. She shipped it off to be cleaned and refurbished, then surprised him with his restored gem: The Gray Mamba jersey.”

It’s incredible that Breen was able to recover such a special item despite the immense damage done to his home.
Most importantly, he and his family are still alive and well.
“This sounds kind of corny but something bad really happened,” Breen said. “But it became this blessing because we received all this love and kindness from so many people. And it’s hard to express how it feels to know that people really care about you and care about your family.”
