Mike Epps is the newest cast member of S.J. Clarkson’s Sony film Madame Web. Deadline reports that the comedian will appear in the upcoming film based on the Marvel Comics character of the same name by writer Denny O’Neil and artist John Romita Jr. The film is set to start filming in Boston this month.

Madame Web is the first female Marvel lead character developed in the Sony Pictures Universe. The character first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man #210, published in November 1980. In the comics, she is depicted as an older clairvoyant mutant suffering from an autoimmune disorder and attached to a life-support device that resembles a web. However, the film is an origin story, and Dakota Johnson will play Madame Web. Epps’ role has yet to be confirmed.

The film has previously announced Johnson, Sydney Sweeney, Isabela Merced, Emma Roberts, Celeste O’Connor and Tahar Rahim as part of the ensemble cast. The film was written by Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless with an early draft from Kerem Sanga.

Epps has appeared in numerous films, including The Last Black Man in San Francisco, Dolemite Is My Name, Next Friday and Girls Trip. In addition, Epps has been busy lately with a recently released Netflix comedy special, signing on to Apple’s Lady in the Lake, a role in the upcoming The Come Up, his Netflix show, The Upshaws, and a role in Prime Video’s I’m a Virgo from filmmaker Boots Riley.

Madame Web is set to come to theaters on July 7, 2023. It closely follows Sony’s release of Kraven the Hunter, another film based on a Marvel character.
