Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta says he has a ‘really promising plan’ to take the Gunners to the next level but it will require ‘determination and hunger’ from the club to pull off.

The Gunners’ title challenge ended last weekend with a 1-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest, which handed Manchester City the Premier League title.

Arsenal had led the league table for most of the campaign but they’ve collapsed in recent weeks, winning just two of their last eight matches.

Ultimately, Arsenal’s lack of experience and squad depth cost the side in the run-in, even if Manchester City’s expertise would have been difficult for the most polished of teams to deal with.

Arteta will seek to rectify that this summer by adding to his midfield and defence.

Declan Rice is a priority target, but West Ham are demanding around £100m for the England international, which is more than Arsenal’s valuation.

The Gunners had two bids rejected for Moises Caicedo in January and Arteta has privately suggested the Ecuadorian could have made a crucial difference to his team in the run-in.

Arteta says he has a ‘really promising plan’ to make amends this summer but he’s challenged his board to show ‘hunger and determination’ to back him.

‘We have to seek excellence in everything that we touch and participate in so that it’s going to have a big impact at the club,’ said Arteta.

‘In order to do that, we have a really promising plan.

‘We may have to reflect a little bit, take a step back, make sure this is the right one and go again with more determination and hunger in the tummies to do even better.’
