MUMBAI: The Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) is looking to appoint former Mumbai captain and chief selector Milind Rege as its advisor for “cricketing matters”.
The 74-year-old’s role, though, will be independent to that of the MCA’s newly-appointed Cricket Improvement Committee, which is headed by former India opener Lalchand Rajput, and includes Sahil Kukreja and Preeti Dimri as its members.
Rege, an off-spinning all-rounder in his time, played 52 first-class games, in which he picked 126 wickets at an average of 29.23, besides scoring 1532 runs at an average of 23.56. He was a part of the team’s six Ranji Trophy triumphs. He was also a MCA selector for 35 years, and was a part of the Mumbai selection committee which picked a teenaged Sachin Tendulkar first.
In an email (TOI has a copy) to the members of the Apex Council on Tuesday, MCA secretaries Ajinkya Naik and Deepak Patil sought their opinion on Rege’s appointment.
“Dear Apex Council members, with the appointment of the CIC, we have taken the first step towards preparing for the upcoming cricketing season. The Rajput-led committee will definitely strive towards improving our on-ground performances. Along with the CIC, it is important to utilise the experience of former Mumbai cricketers. There are many Mumbai greats who are willing to spare their time and share their knowledge for the betterment of Mumbai cricket,” wrote the secretaries.
The email mentioned that Rege has “graciously” agreed to MCA president Amol Kale’s request to help out the association on cricketing matters. The Apex members have been asked to respond to the proposed appointment by April 19.
“Hon’ble president sir has discussed with Rege and requested him to share his wealth of experience in cricketing matters. Rege, who has served MCA for many years in different capacities, has graciously accepted president sir’s proposal to be appointed as an advisor to MCA for cricketing matters on honorary basis. The Apex Council will definitely benefit from the experience of Rege. We would like to know your thoughts on the said appointment. Kindly share your suggestions, if any, regarding the proposed appointment on or before 19th April 2023,” the email mentioned.
Rege’s appointment is likely to be finalised at an Apex Council meeting in May.
