Millie Bobby Brown’s debut novel is coming out and it’s inspired by her family history

If you’re looking for a little bit of a Monday motivation, here’s something for you. Millie Bobby Brown – the once unknown kid who shot to fame starring as Eleven on Stranger Things aged 12 has accomplished rather a lot. She became a film producer at 13, started her own vegan beauty brand at 15, starred alongside Mariah Carey in a Christmas special at 18 and now, aged 19, she’s an author.

The actress announced news of her debut novel, named Nineteen Steps, on Instagram revealing that her book is set to land on shelves on September 12 and gave her fans a bit of background on what to expect. Brown said in the video and accompanying text, “Nineteen Steps is a historical novel about an amazing, courageous 18-year-old woman called Nellie Morris, who lives with her family in Bethnal Green, in London’s East End, while the second world war rages on around them. When a tragic accident occurs during an air raid one night, the consequences are catastrophic – and life will never be the same again for Nellie.”

The Enola Holmes star revealed that writing the book “has been a really special project for me” and told fans the story was inspired by her own family history. “I really hope you will find the true spirit of love and strength in Nineteen Steps, and I can’t wait to share it with you.”

While we don’t have a cover yet, her publisher, William Morrow said on its website: “Nineteen Steps is a deeply affecting, mesmerizing page-turner,” adding that it is “an epic story of longing, loss, and secrets.”

Brown’s novel’s link to her family history is vague at this stage but in the video she held up a photo that appeared to be of herself and her grandmother so we’re guessing perhaps her grandmother has inspired the novel’s protagonist. We know that Millie was born in Spain, with British parents and that at least one of her grandparents used to share stories with her of living in WWII-era England. After she lost her “nanny Ruth” to Alzheimer’s disease in November 2020, she wrote a tribute that mentioned her grandmother’s war memories, per the Daily Mail. “Ill [sic] tell everyone about you and the lessons u [sic] taught me,” she wrote.

We’ll have to wait until September to see – you can pre-order Nineteen Steps now.
