Minecraft: All Trails & Tales Armor Trims

Minecraft: All Trails & Tales Armor Trims

Minecraft’s Trails and Tails update added lots of new content to the game including a new biome, blocks, and a new mob. However, many players looked forward to the Armor Trims being added to the game. These are cosmetic improvements to your armor which have millions of possible combinations to customize your character.

However, you’ll need to farm the smithing templates to make use of armor trims, and putting an armor trim onto armor consumes expensive materials such as emerald, diamond, or Netherite. To limit wasted effort, here is a preview of each of the new Armor Trims, and where to find them.

16 Sentry Armor Trim

Sentry Armor trim on gold armor from Minecraft

The Sentry Armor Trim is a simple number that adds a colored line to each armor piece. Like all armor trims, there are ten materials you can use to apply the trim, each with its color. These trims in turn can be applied to any armor type – making the possibilities almost endless.

You’ll need the Sentry Smithing Template to apply this trim to your armor, which can be found in the chests of a Pillager Outpost. Pillager Outposts can spawn in most biomes, appearing every couple hundred to 1000 blocks. There is a 25% chance for the chest in a Pillager Outpost to have a stack of 2 of the Sentry template.

15 Dune Armor Trim

This set closely resembles the decorations found on the front and floors of desert temples, which is an homage to how to obtain them. To apply this trim to your armor, simply use the Dune Smithing Template, which commonly drops in Desert Temples.

There is a 14.3% chance that a chest inside the secret room of a Desert Temple contains a stack of two Dune Smithing Templates, which means you’re likely to find at least one since Desert Temples generate with four chests. The only risk when hunting this template is that you’ll trigger the TNT trap in the center of the secret room – blowing yourself and all your loot sky-high.

14 Coast Armor Trim

The pop out, ornate pattern of the Coast Armor Trim may not immediately call to mind the ocean, and this is where you’ll need to head for a chance of getting the corresponding Coast Smithing Template. This armor trim’s smithing template only spawns in the map, treasure, and supply chests of Shipwrecks. Shipwrecks can generate at the bottom of the ocean, on the surface of the water, or on the beach.

Even though the drop rate of Coast Smithing Templates is similar to the Dune variation, Shipwrecks themselves generate more rarely than temples. The result is that this template feels more difficult to find, although motivated players can expect the added bonus of going treasure hunting!

13 Wild Armor Trim

The Wild Armor Trim is similar in appearance to the Sentry model, but has a thicker point in the center of the chest piece as well as a double-swooped line across the forehead instead of a single swoop. To apply this trim, you’ll need to get your hands on at least one copy of the Wild Smithing Template. This template is the only one to have moss growing on it.

The Wild Smithing Template drops in stacks of two in the chests of Jungle Temples, similar to the Dune Template in the desert. Also, similar to their desert cousins, the two chests where these templates spawn will be locked behind a puzzle or trap – player beware.

12 Tide Armor Trim

Tide Armor Trims are the first trim on this list whose smithing template cannot be obtained from a chest. Instead, players will need to suit up and get ready for a fight. The Tide Smithing Template is an occasional drop from killing an Elder Guardian, three of which spawn in each Ocean Monument. Interestingly, rather than resembling the mob they come from, this Armor Trim resembles a Prismarine Block.

To locate an Ocean Monument, you’ll need to go hunting in the depths of the deep ocean. Ocean Monuments can spawn near the central point of a Deep Ocean, Deep Lukewarm Ocean, and Deep Cold Ocean Biomes. Since these biomes are far from land it is handy to bring a Potion of Water Breathing with you.

11 Ward Armor Trim

The Ward Armor Trim is reminiscent of the faces inside a Warden’s chest (and this is no accident). To kit out your gear with this trim, you’ll need to obtain Ward Smithing Templates, which can be found inside the chests of Ancient Cities. Once you’ve found an Ancient City, each chest inside will have a 5% chance to contain a single Ward Smithing Template. While each Ancient City has several chests, it is entirely possible you’ll need to loot two or three before finding one.

Ancient Cities spawn inside the Deep Dark Biome at y=-51 and were originally added as part of the Wild Update. The Deep Dark is a Dangerous place, so consider brewing potions, getting some better gear, and reading up on tips to stay safe before heading out.

10 Vex Armor Trim

If you’ve ever wanted to dress up like an Evoker, the Vex Armor Trim is for you. Like its Illager inspiration, this set’s Smithing Template is found inside Woodland Mansions. The chance of finding it in each chest is quite high at 50%, and its unlikely that you’ll need to raid more than one Woodland Mansion to obtain it.

However, Woodland Mansions themselves can be tricky to find. They generate only in new Dark Forest chunks, and often spawn thousands of blocks away from the World Spawn point. For the best chances of locating a Woodland Mansion, obtain a Woodland Explorer Map from a Cartographer Villager.

9 Rib Armor Trim

The Rib Armor Trim, named for its small lines reminiscent of bones, is meant to resemble the Wither Skeleton mob. Players can loot the corresponding Rib Smithing Template from chests in Nether Fortresses, with a 6.7% drop chance in each chest. Fortresses are quite common in the nether, with each region (approximately 450×450 blocks) generating a structure.

Because Nether Fortresses are willed with Wither and Blaze mobs, it is suggested to wait until you are well geared before hunting down this template, and to bring some Potions of Fire Resistance with you.

8 Snout Armor Trim

The Snout Armor Trim was designed to resemble Piglins, so that you can show off your gold hoarding streak. Unfortunately, like all armor trims, no amount of gold trims will pacify Piglins. To apply this trim to your gear, you’ll need the Snout Smithing Template, which is only found in Bastion Remnants.

Bastion Remnants, like Nether Fortresses, can only spawn in the Nether. These structures are home to Piglins and Hoglins. There are a number of different chests types in a Bastion Remnant, all of which have an 8.3% chance to contain a single Snout Smithing Template.

7 Eye Armor Trim

This armor trim is one for those who want to make it clear they are always watching. Not only does the set have a large eye on the chest plate, but the helm is also designed to resemble the eyes of an Ender Man. All of this is a clue about where you can find the Eye Smithing Template, which can appear in Stronghold chests (10% in standard chests and 100% in library chests).

To locate a Stronghold, you can throw Eyes of Ender, walking in the direction that the eye flies until it begins to go downwards. However, you can also estimate where Strongholds will generate based on distance from the World Spawn point. There should be three Strongholds between 1200 and 3000 blocks from the World Spawn Point, evenly spaced from one another in a ring.

6 Spire Armor Trim

The Spire Armor Trim is one of the most valuable in the game, owing to the difficulty in obtaining it. Resembling a Shulker, this Armor Trim can only be placed on gear after you have looted a Spire Smithing Template from an End City. While it is not impossible to search End Cities before killing the Ender Dragon, it is much harder, meaning you likely won’t see this trim until late game.

Notably, Spire Smithing Templates can only spawn in normal chests, not Ender Chests, and have a 6.7% chance per chest. The result is that you may need to search several End Cities, a feat that is very tedious unless you have crafted an Elytra.

5 Wayfinder Armor Trim

The Wayfinder Armor Trim is one of several whose smithing templates are only found via the new Archeology mechanic. To have a chance of getting Wayfinder Smithing Template, players will need to find a Trail Ruin, then use the Archeology Brush on Suspicious Gravel.

Trail Ruins generate mostly underground, with only their tower visible. These towers are identified by Cobble, brick, and Terracotta blocks which stand out from the surrounding terrain. It appears that Trail Ruins are most likely to spawn near waterways such as rivers, inside the Forest, Jungle, and Taiga biomes.

4 Raiser Armor Trim

The Raiser Armor Trim Set looks similar to the totem of undying, possibly where it got its name. However, instead of originating from a place where these totems are found, you can only find them in Trail Ruins. Like Wayfinder Smithing Templates, the Raiser Smithing Template is obtained through brushing Suspicious Gravel.

Each Trail Ruin has an assortment of Rare and Standard Suspicious Gravel blocks. Every rare suspicious block has an 8.3% chance of dropping a Raiser Smithing Template, but there is no way to tell which ones are rare. You’ll need to brush them all and hope.

3 Shaper Armor Trim

When you look at the Shaper Armor Trim, it looks like something someone might wear to a Jazzercise class in the 80s. From the headband to the apparent sweatbands on the arms and legs, this is a set for someone ready to sweat. Indeed, getting this Armor Trim will take some sweating.

To apply this armor trim, you’ll need the Shaper Smithing Template and one of the ten eligible resources for trimming. The Shaper Smithing Template can be found in Trail Ruins by would be Archeologists when they use the brush on Suspicious Gravel blocks. Because of its’ low drop chance, expect to scour several Trail Ruins before finding what you are looking for.

2 Host Armor Trim

Everyone wants to be a good Host – and if you want to show off your title as the perfect Host to your friends, then this might be the Armor Trim for you. Applying this trim will consume one copy of the Host Smithing Template – meaning you’ll need four templates for a set of armor. This can be achieved by duplicating the first template you find in a crafting table, or by farming several templates in the wild.

Either way, you’ll need to farm at least the first template, which can be done via Archeology. Each rare Suspicious Gravel Block in a naturally generated Trail Ruin has an 8.3% chance to drop a Host Smithing Template.

1 Silence Armor Trim

Finally, we have the rarest of all the new Armor Trims, the Silence Armor Trim. This trim depicts the wearer’s armor being enveloped by Skulk, which is where the set gets its name. To apply the Silence Armor Trim, use the Silence Smithing Template and an eligible resource, which will both be consumed.

Silence Smithing Templates are only obtainable from standard chests in Ancient Cities of the Deep Dark, where they have a 1.2% chance of appearing as loot. To find an ancient city, look for Deepslate Blocks at layer -51.
