Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One Eyes $240-Million Worldwide Weekend

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One isn’t making the same grandiose splash The Entity’s submarine did in the opening sequence of the movie. However, according to Deadline, the latest numbers show the new Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise team-up has a legitimate chance to reach $240 million worldwide. But it doesn’t appear the sequel will hit Paramount Pictures’ $90-million projection for the film’s five-day weekend domestically. Rather, it’s more likely that the new Mission: Impossible will take in about $78 million in the United States.

At the time of this writing, Mission: Impossible 7 is positioned at just north of $54 million for its three-day total from Wednesday, July 12 through Friday, July 14. According to The Numbers, the film has fared better internationally with a total take so far of $82.1 million. So, the possibility of Dead Reckoning reaching $240 million globally is a very real possibility. But consider the context.

Spider-Man: Across the Universe leads all summer blockbusters with $121 million during its opening three-day (June 2-4), not five-day, weekend (via Box Office Mojo). The silver medal goes to Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3’s $118-million three-day (May 5-7) total and the bronze falls to The Little Mermaid’s $96 million over three days (May 26-28). Lump Memorial Day onto that total, and the live-action Disney flick rises to $119-million for its opening weekend.

Should Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One make $78 million domestically, as forecasted, it will still be the top opening weekend for any of the other films in the franchise. In 2018, Mission: Impossible – Fallout set the curve with its $61.2 million (per Box Office Mojo). Fallout went on and brought in a series-best worldwide total of $791 million. And don’t forget Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol limped out of the starting gate with a franchise-low opening of only $13 million. However, the fourth installment of the Mission: Impossible movies ended up making a total of $695 million globally.

So, don’t count out Tom Cruise and his new film, even if it doesn’t quite stack up to the numbers some of the other summer blockbusters are posting. Cruise has been serving diligently as an ambassador for not only Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One, but for the experience of seeing movies in a theatrical setting, too. It’s something near and dear to his heart.

In an interview with Rotten Tomatoes, Cruise said:

I love cinema. I love that experience. I go to movies to see [them] with audiences. I like that experience. It’s something that you can’t compare to anything else. I love seeing live performance[s]. You want that sense of community, and we make our movies for the big screen. So, it’s something that I’ve always championed. And now it’s just become a little more obvious over the past few years.

Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie have even popped up at several fan screenings in cities like Toronto, Atlanta and Washington D.C. to promote the sequel. Making the rounds has obviously been a long, arduous journey for the film’s star and its director, but it’s also one they enjoy. Check out the video from their Dead Reckoning trip now:
